You need to plug the wire given into the motherboard's audio channel pin.

FuZzy, Pop's needs pictures. Haven'[t you learnt anything from da Meeja?
Not pictures of dolphins and lightsabres though. He doesn't need them.

It's not that tricky- my pc has a headphone and a mic socket on the front panel and the headphone socket doesn't work. I was just asking if there was anything I could do to make it work. I don't got no given wires.
No dolphins, though.

The wires comes build in with the casing, if I have great googling skills I'd help with pictures, but till then I can't be much of a help other than tell you it can be done

The editing was all about the second line. And pictures Pop's doesn't need. Though his avatar is doing strange non-appearance things today. I left in those mistakes as I liked the looks of them I like also how Pop's says it's not that tricky I think Coffers would be the best to answer this question. My only suggestion involves manuals which basically renders me useless. Sorry Pops.

Would anyone recommending applying an updated drivers package for my motherboard chipset, or are there Popsian dangers waiting to bite me on the ass?

Unless I feel there is a known issue with my Mobo it's rare I update, but it's still useful to do if you like frigging around with settings.

I'm still trying to address this USB issue, Dave. i.e. the USB ports recognising all bog standard mp3 players as Removable Disks, but not the wife's new Sony mp3 player, which it insists is an MTP Windows Portable Device, but refuses to show it on Explorer.
My fault for not having genuine XP, I suppose. Tcha.

if it's a USB connectivity issue then I'd obviously advise it, but if it's simply the fact your USB isn't detecting it - are you sure you aren't overloading your USB's?
I.e. if you have something like a Printer running off your USB, then your trouble might be there (it'll draw power and resources resulting in other ports not having a fair share enough to initialise the item you've plugged in).
Try opening My Computer, unplugging all extraneous USB items from your comp, (including your mouse and keyboard if they go in that way) then plug in the MP3 player.
If it works then unplug the MP3 player and reinsert your keyboard+mouse and try it again. Slowly reintroduce more USB items until it ceases to function again.
Long shot - but rear power ports and front powered ports tend to share a lot of resources resulting in these kind of weird side effects.

Any clue as to how to enable the headphone socket on the front of a pc? There's normally two ways that works. There's either a set of grey (usually) cables or cable that stretch from your rear sound ports and you can loop around and plug into the front arse side. Alternatively you'll find a little black cable type object, maybe even two depending on if you have an onboard sound card and a secondary one. Chances are your little black cable needs clicking off the Motherboard soundcard and clicking onto the relevant place on the seperate sound card (if you have one). Any other way around and it's fooked.

Oh, and Rear Ports > Front Ports when it comes to plugging in powered items.

Cheers for that. I've tried the mp3 in all USB sockets. I have 4 rear ports, 2 front. The rear have a mouse and a webcam plugged in (I took the hub out) and also a camera cable that doesn't get used until I plug the other end into the camera and switch it on. I've tried the player in all ports with and without the webcam etc, only ever leaving the mouse in.
The front ports I use for my little mp3 players- the little 1Gbers. They just whack in, appear as a Removable Disk in Explorer and I drag and drop. This is what's supposed to happen with the Sony. But when I put it in, it pops up as an MTP device and doesn't appear on Explorer. I managed to bundle some stuff onto it using Realplayer, but it was a bit shambolic. It appears in Device Manager as a Windows Portable Device.
I could use WMP 11 if I had a genuine XP, but don't, so can't. I did d/load a tool that will allegedly genuinise my XP, but I got cold feet before using it. I also downloaded an updated set of stuff for my chipset, but got cold feet with those too.
Sigh.
Yet, I went ahead and bought myself a Sony too, because the quality is shit-hot. This "asking for vouchers" for birthdays is the way forward- I garnered close to £200 in vouchers and got not one pair of socks or deoderant set.
Minted.
They've repackaged and relaunched Red Dwarf with bags of extras for just £7/£8 a pop, so I'm scooping those up.

In that case I can only think it's something motherboard specific. Patching/flashing it is probably your last hope unless you can cop a free copy of WinXP.
Speaking of which, I'll see what we have. I still need to send you Pro Evo, so I'll see what actualy genuine OS we have in the house. I know we have a full copy of Win2000 and quite possibly have a Works edition of XP (i.e. an unbound license jobbie).

Another Q - I've now downloaded that patch from here as this gazebo pc is genuine. Do you think it will work if I stick in on a memory stick and take it home?

Maybe. Some of the standalone patches don't check for authentification unless you are doing it through the automatic Windows Update. Suck it and see.
I've phoned my Dad and we do have a Windows Genuine copy of XP, business stylee multiple license jobbie, and a full version of Win2000.

New scenario:
BT Home Hub installed- functioning happily on PC through ethernet.
Laptop- has wireless card which the mother-in-law uses quite happily to connect to her wifi. I crank it up- put in the relevant keys etc- the laptop "sees" the network (both through Windows Connection Manager and BT COnnection manager) but won't connect to it. It tries, few seconds, then says "can't".
I don't see any other settings I can mess with.
Ideas?

Good luck with that Pops, my home laptop has similar problems, the in built wireless is useless, I used a Netgear dongle for a while and then that stopped working for no apparent reason. I've never been able to get it to work since.
I'll probably have to dig the disks out that came with the dongle and re-install it sometime, but for the moment I'm using it hardwored.
I have absolutely no problems using my works Dell and it's inbuilt wireless capabilities, with my router, so I know it's not the Netgear router itself, just the home laptop and/or dongle.

If it's any consolation, my PC and Nic's wireless laptop can both go on t'Internet, but don't want to see each other.
Much like their owners.
