Meh!
Our more than slightly dodgy secondary finally gets caught out by the Bears. Our offence is in fairly rampant form but so is theirs. And marginally more rampant, it has to be said. Despite leading 27-20 with less than 2 minutes to go the FOF 2-minute code kicks in and Frank Patrick passes all over our bottoms (including a particularly painful 4th and 17 conversion) to tie up the game on the last play of regulation time and they take the win in OT. Once again we're unable to convert 1st downs in the opponent's 10-yard line and this time it really costs us as we could have been leading 31-20 instead of 27-20 and would have been as safe as it's possible to be what with the 2-minute offence code. On the plus side our run averaged over 5 a carry with all three backs contributing and Bradshaw got a pretty impressive rating of 123.3. (which rather begs the question, how the hell did we lose).
10-1 and the Jaguars are starting to sniff blood at 7-4 (they have a game against us as well), while 2 teams (Pats and Bengals) are at 8-3 and could steal our first week bye away from us.

Rejoice as there's no SF-esque Mooski Plummet for the Anachies. We bounce back to dry hump the Kansas City Chiefs 13-3 or somesuch. Things looked dicey at the start as Ken "Snake" Stabler drive the length of the field on their opening possession but good old Cleo Johnson picked him off in the end zone. On their next drive we got another interception which set up the only TD of the game. After that and after Jack Ham had crippled their only decent receiver Lew Porter (MCL Knee Surgery - byebye Lew) it was pretty much plain sailing - apart form our offence being bogus.
So there we are, sitting pretty at 11-1 and we can now afford to bench starters in an Indianapolis Coltsesque fashion. And, hey, it worked for them didn't it? Right?

Nark, you can't possibly bench your starters, three of them are in my fatnasty team and I'm unbeaten all season. If you bench them I'll probably lose the final which I think I'm a lock to play in.

Nice to see you're taking defeat so well after all these months.
Are you sure you're an Aussie?

Nice work Narkle. Looking good for a decent run in the playoffs here.
I've picked up the Bills franchise I was playing with months/years ago, having got my FOF fully licensed up once again. It's slow going at the moment as I'm spending time going through my squad to see who I've got and what they can give me. I've done the drafts and free agency and all that whatnot - the exhibition season is about to kick off and I'm setting up some kind of gameplan to help me through the season.
We have an outstanding QB (just signed up to a massive 4 year deal) who looks perfect for some kind of west coast offence type thing, and I have a fullback, tightend and halfback who all look like good candidates to catch all those short passes. The running game could be a bit trickier, as I don't have an outstanding back, but my offensive line are pretty cohesed at the moment, so I'm hoping the guys I've got in the backfield can do a reasonable job. I haven't had a proper look at the defense yet, but I know I've got some useful players in all the right positions - our MLB and FS are shithot, and I've got a couple of CBs who look decent in man-to-man situations. The best part of this team, however, is the kicking game, with both my punter and kicker rating over 90.
Hopefully I'll form a gameplan over the next few days (busy times, so not much gametime at the moment) and give the season a whirl.

Kickers who can get you longrange fieldgoals and rarely miss the easy ones give you valuable points on stalled drives, while punters who can really hoof it accurately give you great field position advantage. These guys are pretty cheap, too, which helps.

Unfortunately the game's randomness is no more clearer than with kickers as apparently stud kickers can have nightmarish seasons mixed with super-duper ones.
Boony, a west coast offence is hard to run in the game for one stupid reason (unless you play call in the game). You can't alter the length of passes depending on situation. So, infuriatingly, if you're 3rd and 12 you'll get a useful little 5 yard pass which does you absolutely no pantfishing good whatsoever.
Also if you over-emphasize those distances the defence will pretty quickly pick up on it and you'll be seeing "The defence looked well prepared for that play" sooner than you can eat a jumbo sausage when you've had "a couple".

You can't? Well that's a bit rubbish. Surely the game knows how far you need to go for a first down...
To put the defence off I was hoping to have quite a balanced run/pass mix. We shall see how it goes.

No, no it doesn't. Which is another reason why long-passes are teh fluff.
Hopefully that will all be sorted out in the new game.

So my plan of resting a lot of my starters to avoid unfortunate accidents on the concrete floor of the Minnesota playing "field" backfired a bit as half my O-line picked up injuries anyway and we lost (once again thanks to a late comeback by the Lions - quell surpris). Luckily my luck for the year hasn't worn out yet as the Jaguars completely spanked my bottom (twice as much offensive yardage) but still contrived to lose to us 35-30 - thanks to 2 interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 1 fumble deep in their half, 1 50 yard kick return, 1 blocked punt deep in their half and a partridge in a pear tree. So, my defence was, basically, what I needed in my fantasy match up with DC this week. (Apart from the 30 points allowed natch).
All this means I've won the AFC South but the bastarding Bengals and Patriots keep on winning so I still can't afford to bench all my starters despite a lot of them now being probable. I need one more win (hopefully at home to the Lions this week) and then I can rest everyone in week 17 and still have homefield advantage - and another week off to rest up the players).
12-2 it is at the moment.

What's that you ask?
Yes. Yes, actually I am in the HFL Bowl for 1977 since you ask. Despite playing significantly worse this year than I did in 1976 (when I went 14-2). Of course I'm relying on an aging halfback (Larry Brown) to carry my hopes to the finals in a game that absolutely luuuurves deep passing plays but what's one to do?
My masterstork this year was to bench long-time Raven QB Terry Bradshaw for, erm, some other bloke none of you will have heard of. Bradshaw was all well and good but threw far too many picks which wasn't the way forward if I was going to capitalise on Larry Brown's increasing good running displays.
So we're up against the Cowboys on Wednesday night (I think) and will get a sound tonking as is right and fitting for our pains.
After that it's up in the air whether the league will carry on as there's been too many people dropping out. We're switching to FOF2007 but that might not be enough to save the league so this could be my swansong.
Anyone wanting to dip their toes in MP FOF leagues are welcome to join. At the moment it looks like I'll be the only human in the AFC South so a divot division wouldn't be an impossibility.
[/Nark's regular pathetically forlorn attempt to get people interested in joining a FOF MP league]

As I don't have the internet access at home and don't have FOF, I think it unlikely I'll be joining you. I applaud your continual efforts at attempting to get it going though :humb:
Good luck in the Anachronistic Stupid Bowl.

Ah-ha! Larry is Bowl MVP and I win the big one making me 2-0 for Championship games. I rawk! 23-17 isn't really an emphatic win but when you can hold onto the ball for the last 6 minutes of the game it's good enough. Had we been forced to punt I've no doubt FOF's lovely 2 minute drill code would have screwed us.
My much maligned pass defence toadally shut down the Cowboy's passing game and got two picks in to hand me the game. Larry wasn't all that to be honest but he did get a 25-yard touchdown scamper in bless his mean looking eyes. ("You eyeballing me"?)
Anyway that's probably that for the HFL. Least I go out with a bang.
