Ruining my home record with their ultra-defensive 0-0 inducing ways. On the plus side we came second and we got a "one of the best players in his position in his generation" AM/FC youngster pop up from our youth academy. Which is nice. Oh! And Manchester United shelled out 7.5m for Defoe even though his contract was about to run out and I had no intention of giving him a new deal. So that's good.

Incidentally, good news as old Gareth Southgate makes it three from three, following his successes with Middlesbrough and Birmingham he manages to get West Ham relegated. Unfortunately he hasn't been sacked yet, thus denying him the chance to get a fourth team relegated. My mistake. He's just taken charge of Newcastle. Unlucky Moo.

Mah! The same pattern is emerging as last year. I win easily at home (apart from against Boro who played me off the field in the first half, but then I got all stroppy in my half-time talk and we came back to win 4-1), but I can't get a win away. I can't really lose either but either way it shags things up. Apparently there's a bit of debate on SpInG about the home and away stats because (less extreme versions) of what I'm seeing crop up all the time.
Judging from my experience in the Boro game I can imagine the problem is half-time team talks. I've lost track of the times we've dominated the first half away, only to concede an early second half goal.
However Chelsea don't appear to be an unstoppable force of nature this year (for the first time in the game) So maybe 76 points will be enough to win the league (3 at home, 1 away).

It's a bit lame how the Big Cup final has been an all-English affair for the first three years. Obviously a result of only running the English league but there should be some sort of balance put in to stop that - I know it's happened in all previous C/FMs but not to that extent. To get all early noughties about it it's totally gay.

I've cunningly solved my problem with winning at home and drawing away by pfaffing around a bit with tictacs and whatnot and, consequently, losing home and away. I rock!
Getting bored with it now I have to say. I predict that four years is the most I'll ever manage on "==/.

Tactics, pretty tough to begin with, actually get harder once teams start to think that you're a title contender and wheel out their 4141 tictacs at your place while rely on the huge advantage to be garnered at home (team talks work better, away players make a lot more stupid mistakes) to grab points off of you at their place). Nice work SpInG! You've made a game that simulates pretty accurately what it would be like if I was a manager (although not quite). Nirvana has been reached.

Or the trendy little changing around of forwards when using a one striker formation so your defender winds up man-marking a midfielder and goes rushing over to him as soon as the opponents have the ball. I've seen them move a foward to the wing and a midfielder with only akward at striker be moved up to the top spot before.

On the plus side young Kollerclonewholikestheballtohisfeet (who really isn't anything like Koller at all) scored all three goals in the worthless cup against Everton. Luckily two of them were for us so we at least pick up some silverware this year. We also seem to have got the Everton monkey off our back beating them 4-0 at our place. New bogey team/player is Kevin Doyle for Reading who seems to have scored the winning goal against us every year at their place. The git.
Knocked out of the Big Cup by Man Utd, embarrassingly knocked out of the FA Cup in the 5th round (out earliest exit) by championship struggling Leeds and that's about it for the year. Oh, apart from what looks like another 2nd place for us, behind Arsenal this time though for a change.

To be fair to myself and whatnot, both my wingers are ridiculously injury-prone and I'm still trying to give young players from our youth side a chance (although I did go on a bit of a splurge last offseason and shed £30m without blinking). So I'll give it another year to see if time starts to wear down the big three (Liverpoo don't count anymore). There's encouraging signs that ManUre are getting crappier (even if they did knock us out of the Big Cup) and Chelsea aren't the unstoppable force of nature they once were either. Unfortunately Arsenal seem to be improving, which isn't good. To such an extent that they can afford to play Henry as a left winger.

So there it is. The board are disappointed with our league position at the end of the year despite the fact that we finished second and had a mathematical chance at winning the league in the final game and they wanted us to challenge for the title. So it looks like it's win something big next year or get first hand experience of how it feels to be moo.

Henry always seems to line up on the wing when I play Arsenal, but quickly moves up front. Much like what Man Utd do with Rooney.

Rooney always plays up front for Ure. Mainly because they don't have any other decent striker while having Mancini and Ronaldo on the wings.
Bizarrely the board have lessened their demands for the new season, contenting themselves with qualification for Europe. What's that all about? Is it because they slashed my transfer budget because of my excessive spending the year before? Oh OK, "slashed" then.
Anyway, I've been playing around with a non-442 tictac in a daring fit of experimentation and am quite pleased with it, it seemed to give me more wins away allowing me to get out of my losing streak and make a decent fist of contending the title. It's not a million miles removed from DC's arrowhead but with three players in the AM spots and two at DM/M. (and doesn't rely on a big, lumbering forward). So we shall see what that brings about.
Italy played France in the World Cup final with France winning on penalties this time while Ireland beat Brazil to come 3rd. As you'd expect. England lost 1-0 to Russia in the 2nd round game. I haven't had any notification but I guess Beardsley's job is hanging on a wire.

So it's a 4-2-3-1.
Rather like what I was using in CM00/01.
"Interesting".
