Which update/patch are you on about, Pops? Is this just 3.9.68, or have you gone further than that into the misty realms of Tapani patches? Also, which update have you used? 3.9.68 seems to be perfectly happy with 2 defenders, although I've semi-successfully implemented a 4-4-2 with plenty of wibble/wobbling.
Hard luck on the sacking - you definitely need a blend of youth and experience in your squad in this game. Good luck at the new club!

I used that patch and then an update thing from a forum one of you pointed out.
I wasn't using fullon FuaDtW - maybe fudging the issue.
And a false sense of security having romped the league before.
Maybe a newfound sense of caution. Let's see how long it lasts.

I didn't get much of a game in last night due to Circumstances Beyond My Control™ (involving boats, lobsters, ugley fish, huge aggressive depressed crabs, bogged Land Rovers, bogged Hi-lux that went to rescue Land Rover, tractors, beer, sand and shepherd's pie- you had to be there).
So improving the squad is a task I can attack with relish, especially with the 800k that I now possess.
But, as we all know, money is nothing when no-one fancies your club.
I take the tack that loans will play a big part in life in L1, so on that note, first man in was Mr Deeds a Belorussian D/DM RL on loan from Legia.
Hot on his heels... well, I said I wouldn't do it, but I did. I went back to Polkowice to raid. Looking at them, I can see why I went for some of them, but others attributes were on the tailspin.
Dancey Muppet was still untied on his contract, so I snapped him up. An 18 yo with stats to die for and highly rated all round. His contract situation is such that he will arrive in October on a Bozzer.
Also on the loan front comes Tinted Seagulls a SW/D RC. Looking good. From Gornik Z.
Freedom of contract sees us lose OM in the Dark, who was a nonce anyway.
Three friendlies are arranged pre-season.
H v Warta Poznan: 6-2: Tinted Seagulls ; Brahms' Moderato ; Rubber John John ; Arachnaglobia 2 ; Gettifa Yabassa.
Decent enough result against a non-league outfit.
1st July Bosman joys: Arriving: Bill, Ted, Death, GK, 28, POL. Fire Monkey, D/DM RC, 20, POL. Shortbread Faggot, AMC, 19, SCO. Sprong, SW/D C, 25, POL. Bros Fan's Hubby, SW/D C, 28, POL.
I'm guessing my predecessor suspected he had a defensive problem.
St John's Warped goes on loan.
I loan in Foreign Testimony, 24, POL, AM/F RLC.
My best player of the end of last season, DMR, John Wayne's Biro retires. Shockly. The poof.
I spend some cash! 140k on Long Slow Goodbye a D/DMRC, 26, POL, from Amica.
Several signing attempts on guys who were pinpointed by my super scout at Polkowice are rebuffed with vigour.
H v Gala Fairydean: 5-0: Caroff Ya Scally 2 ; Shortbread Faggot ; Tinted Seagulls ; Arachnaglobia.
Dakota Fanny retires as a player, stays as a coach.
Sign Lemon Curd Beard, DM LC, 21, POL. 110k from Lech.
Some staff appear so I sign a scout, two coaches and an Assman.
H v Lok Chita (ooh, baby I had to): 1-3: Foreign Testimony
That was a little embarrassing....
Tinted Seagulls is the subject of a few bids so I have to pay 30k for him as a player, rather than a loanee. I sell Arthur T Gobb, a DL, to Stomil for 22k. My other DL, Pennies from Kevin is also sold.
We start in Group A this time. A v Stomil: 0-0. It's not a defeat...
League Cup. A v Ceramika: 2-0: Arachnaglobia ; Emil the Detective
Foreign Testimony is sent off for kicking somebody.
Not half bad start. It's about the percentages now and the goal is staying in the league, no question.

One thing I did find mildly amusing last night was going through the contract expiries without the "Interested" filter on.
I went to Scott Booth for example- experience Scots striker, just released by Twente- wanted £18500 pw. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
My 675 top wage wouldn't pay for his fig rolls.

Managed to squeeze a little Odra in last night, though not much.
Foreign Testimony got a further 8 match ban for his sending-off, but I didn't bother disciplining him- I suspect that it will be more trouble than it's worth.
H v Polonia: 3-1: Sprong ; Jim Morrison Lives ; Arachnaglobia
Amazing. Admittedly, they were down to ten early second half, but they are the four times on a trot league champions.
The board are ecstatic.
League Cup, Leg 2 H v Ceramika: 2-2: Agg 4-2:Emil the Detective ; og Emil was also dismissed.
A v KSZO: 3-2: Flange 2 ; Fluffy Yellow Chick
H v GKS Katowice: 4-1: Lemon Curd Beard ; Fluffy Yellow Chick ; og ; Jim Morrison Lives
Good result. Chuffed with that one.
H v Pogon: 2-3: Fluffy Yellow Chick ; Jim Morrison Lives
H v Amica: 2-2: Policeman's Hum ; Oh, I've Fallen
Two defenders, two set pieces.
I sell Terracotta Washerwoman to LKS for 22k.
League Cup, 3rd Rd, L1 H v Legia: 3-3: Policeman's Hum ; Flange ; Jim Morrison Lives Decent result against the big boys.
Sign Reversed Bible Salesman , MC, 27, POL, 65k from Odra Wodiszlaw. My prime target refused to leave his cosy little second division club, the nonce.
League Cup, 3rd Rd, L2 A v Legia: 2-6: Fluffy Yellow Chick ; Emil the Detective (p)
Handed our arses on a plate, to put it mildly.
H v Hutnik: 1-1: Flange
Polish Cup H v Flota: 5-2 (aet): Reversed Bible Salesman 2 ; Long Slow Goodbye ; Foreign Testimony ; Paddington Swear
A chance for a few backup players and a debut for the Bible Salesman - one of his goals was an awesome solo effort.
We had 10 men from the 81st minute and they scored a 93rd min equaliser to take it to extra time.
H v KSZO: 2-1: Mr Deeds ; Emil the Detective
I sign Folded Nubbin, FRLC, SWE, 26 for 90k. Unfortunately, and for no reason at all, the transfer is vetoed because I have too many foreigners. Considering I am allowed 5 and only have 2, I am confused on this issue. A lot. And not a little annoyed.
Currently lying 2nd in the 8 group.

Any forriners in the reserves, Pops? Do coaches count as forriners?
Some decent results ther apart from a couple of ass-spankings. No fear of relegation yet though, which is a very good sign indeed.

There's no-one in the reserves at all. Not sure about the coaches. If they do count, then that would be the reason, but it does say "5 foreigners in match day squad" and none of my coaches are players. In fact, they're all furrin, so they can't count, can they? Better class of team, maybe, but also the non-reckless abandon is a reason, coffs. Sadly. I am excited about the arrival of Dancey Muppet next week. He is just 18, stats from heaven and has scored 12 times in 7 games for Polkowice this season. BOund to be my Salenko.

Also, which update have you used? 3.9.68 seems to be perfectly happy with 2 defenders, although I've semi-successfully implemented a 4-4-2 with plenty of wibble/wobbling.] Speaking of Wibble Wobbling. About 5 years ago I was in a conversation (as you do) with various persons within SI discussing wibble wobble in the new FM games as they were due out. Pete Sottrel (head of research and serial Hammer hater given what he did to us each year, and woeful quality control of the Scandinavian leagues), Vaughn and another programmer whose name escapes me but only knew as a nickname. Anyways. According to them Wibble Wobble "doesn't work" with reference to those minor tweaks those of us in the CM community loved so much. Apparently DDL, and all those various Coffee Cup, Arrowhead, TUADTW, gamebreaking formations don't exist, don't work and are a figment of overactive imaginations. Of course They then couldn't quite explain why a 4-1-3-2 was different from a 4-4-2, or 4-1-5 seeing as all their 'positions' are set in the Wibble Wobble screens. A case of "spoon, what spoon?" if ever I read it. Anyway - to cut a long argument short - logarithms became the argument of the day, and my maths sucks and the SI bunch essentially said "so there!" and took their toys away and locked up wibble wobble for future games. Secretly though - it's really there and in fact the sliders and such are a primitive 'ai logic' way of doing the same things. Just without the micro control cheaty functions. Unless you put a central midfielder with a long arrow up the middle of the field on say 03/04. "Shh, don't mention the war" they say; the Wibble Wobble is now hard coded in extensive bits of maths like 11-2+3/34+6 or summat that means representing it on a 2d piece of grass would require 16 dimensions, a temporal space loop and each computer to be powered by a piece of black hole. Or so they said. This totally useless load of old cchat was brought to you by the letter 'Y'. You may now return to your regular scheduled media.

I touched the wibble/wobble once, many years ago. It hurt. So I never touched it again.
Anyway, my interest is waning as the game kicks into fuck mode...
Foreign Testimony signs a pre-contract with Stomil, which shouldn't affect my thinking on him being a loanee at my club, but it does. I automatically think of him as a little bit of a git now, even though I never had any intention of signing him proper, unless he proved Godlike.
I sign a free Spaiiash MC, Auntie Derek.
FRIENDLY (Winter Break). H v Polkowice: 0-0 The hot buttered toast of revenge is less palatable for being dropped on the lino.
FRIENDLY H v Wilhelmshaven: 5-2: Flange 2 ; Reversed Bible Salesman ; Dancey Muppet 2
The first signs that Dancey has the goals to match his stats.
H v Legia (2nd): 2-3: Emil the Detective 2
New crowd/gate records. Terence Trent Slough leaves the club. Bye.
A v Wisla (1st): 2-2: Dancey Muppet ; Jim Morrison Lives Dancey's first proper goal for us.
A v KSZO: 3-2: Dancey Muppet 2 ; Gettifa Yabassa
A v Slask: 1-3: Photosynthesis
A v Pogon: 1-4: Folded Nubbin
A v Polonia: 3-3: Arachnaglobia 2 ; Dancey Muppet
H v Wisla: 1-3: Caroff Ya Scally Amazingly, his first goal for us.
A v Legia: 0-2 H v Zaglebie: 1-2: Arachnaglobia
Height of my fuckedoffedness approaching. We had decent stats in all these games- no-one to really blame as a player. No, we were just automatically beaten. No matter the style of play, we were automatically beaten. They score with most attacks they make, all our opponents. At this point, I realised the relevance of the groups. The top four of A and B form the top 8 of the league table. You then cannot be relegated, as the lowest position possible is 8. But, this also means you only play the other 7 clubs in the top half, i.e. the best 7 clubs in the country, over and over again.
This is not a satisfactory state of affairs- the chances of morale and cash-boosting wins are few and far between. You can hope to maybe scrap some wins out of the lower two or three clubs and grab the occasional win off the bigger boys. At this stage, we were 6th- Slask and KSZO below us, the rest of them are aeons ahead.
H v Pogon: 1-5: Dancey Muppet
In-fucking-sane. They had a man sent off in the 1st minute and proceeded to kick the living shite out of us. This is not fun, when you can't actually compete.
H v Polonia: 1-1: Arachnaglobia
That, mercifully, was the last game of the season- we finish 6th, a whopping 14 points behind 5th, 19 points behind the winners, Zaglebie.
We get a massive 200k. :moop:
Radomsko and Orlen are relegated. Looking down a division, Polkowice survive in L2 by the skin of their teeth.
SO, not really enjoying it at the moment, mostly due to the vagaries of the Polish system and the "sealed" nature of the top 5 teams.
One more attempt to smash it and then maybe a move. I've put lots of leagues on, so the world may well be my whelk.

I spotted the William Connolly reference Pops. I have the "Get Right Intae Him" Lp somewhere, oh how it made me laugh when I was a bairn. It probably would again, if I were to listen.
Anywhores, nice work on the err... finishing the season.
Any league who does a split like that is just not worth bothering abuot, Pops, I would exeunt at the earliest opportunity and reposition myself at a proper league. Like Hungary.
