This thread is dedicated to a College Football team called Cedar Rapids, they are based in Iowa and appear to be in a conference called Solecismic Eight. The year is 2004 and I've turned up as head coach of this outfit, they appear to be suitably crap at Helmetball, so I'll fit in quite well, as I don't know what I'm doing.
In our conference are seven other teams as follows: Burlington (they have a blue star against their name, don't ask me what it means), Davenport, Waterloo, Des Moines, Dubeque, Fort Dodge and Souix City.
Staff and player run downs will appear shortly.

The good thing about playing in the Solecismic Eight is that all the other teams in your conference are as cack as yours.
I wince at what a 20 ranked team will do to your lot though. *wince*

I can see Kansas sticking 65 points on the Rapids.
The problem with being the Rapids is that you'll get to be good enough to win your conference regularly, but because you'll be playing a collection of useless teams you'll find it very hard to get love in the rankings.
UCF are facing a smaller but similar problem in that most of the teams I play will be ranked 50-90, which makes it rough to push into the top 10 voting when everyone else is playing much better teams. If I lose I'll get reamed in the rankings, but if I win everyone will say "of course you won - look at the other lot!"
Good luck anyway. The press-a-button-see-the-result style of play is like crack. Or lottery scratch cards.

Bonus points for setting up in Iowa where you won't get much benefit from players wanting to a college close to their homes as well. Although, on the plus side, you are on the right side of Iowa. You could have been Sioux City instead. That would really make recruiting, erm, interesting. In fact you're in not too bad a spot with Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, St Louis and Kansas City all within spitting distance. (Google Maps tells me).

It's a great spot - he's not that far from Bismarck. :humb: He'll have both Dakotas to recruit from as well as the bigger stuff you mention. He should be able to find enough to win the Sol8 recruiting greens alone. No pressure Coffs.

The STAFF 2004Syndicate Co-ordinater: 34 year old Jerome Ramsey appears to be decent at helping maintain players Academic Eligibility and good at investigating issues, mis-deeds etc. But best of all he has a n excellent rating raiding slush funds to keep the college treasury in order. Offensive Co-ordinator35yo Conrad Bell has has been in the job for 5 years and has a Terrific reputation for developing Quarterbacks and is very good with Offensive linemen. He has a ood reputation with Running backs and is decent enough with Receivers, unfortunately he is Terrible with Kickers so I don't expect many field-goals or Extra Point conversions. He has good play calling and is pretty good at avoiding injuries, coupled to a decent rehabilitation reputation we shouldn't have too many injury problems. Should We? His decent personallity should avoid most conflicts. He seems to like the Pro-Formation offence at present. Defensive Co-ordinatorIan Riley is getting on a bit at 62, he's even older than me, he is excellent with Defensive Linemen and good with Linebackers, though only fair with Secondary players. Whilst he is Terrific with his play calls he Injury avoidance and Rehabilitation skills are only fair. He has a poor attitude and that could cause some bust ups. The Scouts:In the North West we have 36yo Clyde Osbourne, I hope he isn't related to Ozzi or we could be in trouble. Clyde's great claim to fame is his excellent ability to assess players from the Secondary catagory. He has good QB scouting skills and is Decent with receivers. Then thingsdrop away a bit. He drops to Fair for Linebackers and Poor for Running Backs. He rates Lousy and Terrible for all other positions. Moving On to the South West we have 73 year old Arnie Bullock, who is Terrific and Excellent with QB's and Secondaries. He is good with Linebackers and Defensive Linemen and pretty good for Running Backs. Receivers and Kickers get a fair rating but he is lousy with Defensive Linemen. 73yo Gene Bronson heads up the Mid-West scouting operation and is Excellent at finding Secondaries and Defensive Linemen, He has Very Good and Pretty Good for Kickers and Linebackers. WR's he rates good and RB's he's decent. With QB's he's fair and with Offensive Linemen he has a poor reputation. In the Deep South we have 56yo Jackie Willis, He is ecellent with QB's and Terrific with rating DL's. He drops to decent t rating RB's and fair OL's and Linebackers. He rates Lousy and Terrible with all other positions. Moving on to the South East we have Jeff Woods who at 75 must be about to pop his clogs. He's good with Secondary and decent with OL's, then dops to fair for DL's and WR's. I can't be bothered worrying about how bad he is elsewhere suffice to say I'll look to replace him as soon as possible. 69yo Julio Grange looks after The Great Lakes and isn't such a bad option, He is Terrific with Kickers and Excellent for Secondary positions, Linebackers get a good rating and then down to decent for QB's and DL's. He's very good at rating Running backs. In New England is Al Clements whose best attribute is decent at rating WR's everything else is set at Poor or Terrible. FInally in the Mid-Atlantic (I hope he's a good swimmer) is Cole Page, he's young at 33 and bright. He's excellent at spotting kickers and rates Pretty good or Very Good with RB's, OL's, Linebackers and Secondaries. He gets a fair for WR's and Defensive Linemen and is lousy with QB's.

Quarterbacks - Roster Strength rating 19/14 Poor in Starters and reserves
We are rated Poor in the College QB lists and I can see why.
5 Dale Schroeder - Senior - 24/48 In his last year (with 2 years eligibility left) he's our best QB and he'll be our starter for 10. He seems to scramble a lot and is not too bad at 3rd down passing. His major is in Music and he is very intelligent but has average aspirations, that said he's a very unhappy man without any ties.
3 Norman Workman - Junior - 14/14 With two years eligibility remaining I'll use him as backup, but he seems to have reached his full potential. Above average scrambling frequency and his best attributes elsewhere are short and deep passing, but that is very relative. He is academically challenged and is majoring in marketing, which says a lot really. His girlfriend is called Agatha.
15 Donny Calmus - Sophomore - 13/52 This guy has the potential to be a decent QB but I think I'll Red shirt him for this season. He is majoring in Electrical Engineering and has excellent intelligence coupled with pretty good aspirations. He has no girlfriend and seems to be very unhappy with his lot.
12 Levon Conyers - Freshman - 0/3 a walk on really, and will play 3rd fiddle in an extreme emergency.
I really need to find a QB or two in the recruitment drive.

Burlington (they have a blue star against their name, don't ask me what it means), Davenport, Waterloo, Des Moines, Dubeque, Fort Dodge and Souix City. Those are awesome names. I presume that Tumbleweed, Cleft Palate and Shitkicker will be petitioning to join the conference in the near future?

Running Backs - Roster Strength rating 3/13 Poor in both starter and reserve
42 Tim Robertson - Senior - 18/18 He's already been red shirted so he can see this year out in the squad. He still has 2 years eligibility. What can I say, he's crap. Majoring in Trigonometry no aspirations whatsoever but has fair intellect. No girlfriend and poor in the joy stales.
23 Kendrick Goodwin - Senior - 13/13 More dross. Fair aspirations with Very Good intellect. No girlfriend but happy enough.
22 Clarence Bedard - Junior - 13/40 He's also had his red shirt, so can probably be the mainstay of our running game for 2 years, whether he'll improve is another matter. Major in Marketing, high aspirations but poor intelligence. Tiona is his girlfriend and he's very happy.
43 Neil Howe - Fresher - 13/38 Likely red shirt material, majoring in Dentistry with terrific intelligence, but hardly any ambition. Blanche is his partner and he's happy.
44 Adrian Bahn - Fresher - 9/14 walk on player.
Full Backs - Roster Strength rating 31/27 Fair in both counts
45 Howard Dexter - Senior - 24/34 Final Year he gets to play. Major in Geology, Fair intellect with poor ambition. Pretty Happy and hitched with Latonya. Special teams and 3rd down catching are his best attributes.
39 Sean Chevrier - Sophomore - 21/50 3rd down running and catching seem to be his bag but I think I'll red shirt him this year. Terrific ambition but his intelligence is Terrible. Majoring in Marketing. No girlfriend and looking at his happiness rating, I'd say he's close to suicide.
24 Leland Wragge - Junior - 33/39 2 years of eligibility left, I'll use him this year, good 3rd down runner and even better at not fumbling the ball. He seems to have a lot more potential than the 33/9 figures suggest. Majoring in Astronomy with decent intellect but very little ambition. Pretty happy and mating with Tina.
I think I need to find a couple of Running Backs and maybe a Full Back in the recruitment drive.

Tight Ends - Roster Strength rating 12/9 Poor on both counts
99 Ernest Garner - Sophomore - 8/40 Spent his freshman year with a red shirt, so he's playing this season. Good endurance and not too bad on 3rd down Catching and Over The Middle. Major in Accounting with terrific intellect and ambition. OK in the joy stakes.
86 Max Oda - Fresher - 8/8 Majoring in Astronomy Thick as two short planks with no ambition. Reasonably happy though. Going nowhere fast, Good endurance and not too bad on 3rd down Catching and Over The Middle whatever that is. He wants to be an Accountant and has Terrific ambition and intellect. No bird on the arm yet but happy enough.
98 Trent Newton - Sophomore - 21/35 I think I'll play this guy this season and red shirt him next year as I have another Sophomore with similar potential I can Red shirt this season. Looking to be an Accountant with decent ambition but lousy intellect. He might be able to cook the books for the local mafia. Unhappy with no girlfriend.
81 Glen Albert - Sophomore - 10/34 Sophomore who I'll use a red shirt on this season. Not bad endurance and Over the Middle. Marketing major with decent intellect and poor ambition. happy enough.

The scouts think they get better. If you hire someone who's crap at evaluation, he thinks everyone's brilliant.
To pre-empt Horn : See : The Miami Dolphins.

Stroke of luck that you strongest suit appears to be fullback. What with their key importance in the game and all.
*snigger*
You did notice an interesting point though, one that was much discussed without actually going anywhere on FOFC. Namely that often the bars often don't seem to tally with the overall rating. Generally people tend towards believing the bars more than the overall rating but that's, possibly, because they want to be optimistic about things.

Wide Receivers - Roster Roster Strength rating 17/16 Poor on both counts
9 Bart Buchanan - Sophomore - 20/37 Has already had his red shirt so should be clear here on in. Nothing spectacular anywhere in his stats.
82 Lionell Corbett - Sophomore - 8/8 Has stamina potential and that's about it.
80 Ralph Driver - Sophomore - 18/49 had his red short so is clear here on in. Fantastic over the middle skills, not bad at avoiding fumbles and reasonable 3rd down catching , possible big play receiver too.
Eugene Noorman - Junior - 33/38 No red shirt yet but has 2 years eligibility left. Another very good over the middle player, with lower levels in other skills all around the 28 to 40 mark. Could do a job on kick and punt returns.
87 Dwight Sisk - Sophomore - 17/56 Could be the Star of the team, Has had his red shirt Good over the middle and avoiding fumble skills, Potential to be decent on yardage catch frequency and avoiding drops. Could also do a job on kick and punt returns. Pretty low stamina though.
6 Jeff Schwartz - Fresher - 5/25 Walk on player who will be red shirted for his 1st year.
85 Burt Vauthier - Sophomore - 10/10 Walk on who has had his red shirt. He seems to have good stamina to me and has better potential that the 10/10 ratings suggest. He's already had his red shirt so we'll see what the season brings.
Centers - Roster Strength rating 12/20 Poor/Fair
53 Noble Lincoln - Junior - 12/29 Had his red short and gets a start.
51 Dieon Cote - Fresher - 16/59 I should probably red shirt him but as we only have 2 Centers on the team I may have to play him this year. However his stats suggest that the scouts/coaches have overestimated his potential by a street, he seems about on a par to Noble Lincoln attribute wise.
Guards - Roster Strength rating 34/38 Fair on both counts
61 Heath Bailey - Junior 28/48 I may red shirt this guy this year. His stats suggest he is fully developed.
73 Winston Bruseloff - Senior - 28/44 Had his red shirt so will get game time. Most of his potential rating rests on his good stamina.
75 Claude Lenhart - Senior - 35/51 Probably the best Guard in the college, has yet to be red shirted so has one year left. May red shirt him this year, it's a toss up between the Junior and Claude. I'll probably go with the Junior.
70 Tim Humphreys - Fresher - 9/13 Walk on player with more potential than the above stats suggest, in fact to me his potential shows he could be the best guard that we have.
So we now move to defence.

Tackles - Roster Strength rating 3/10 Poor in Starters and reserves
74 Brock Ballard - Fresher - 10/42 Reasonable stamina and that's about it, I think his potential is less than the scouts suggest. Possible Red Shirt.
77 Dwight Barrere - Fresher - 0/19 Again very good stamina, the rest suggests the bin. Red shirt.
62 J. R. Bauer - Sophomore - 11/56 100% in the Endurance stakes with reasonable potential in pass blocking and pass running skills. He's OK to play here on in.
60 J. C. Kennedy - Junior - 15/15 Another who can play out his years in the college. He appears to have reached his full potential and apart from his stamina that isn't saying a lot.
Punters - Roster Strength rating 22/46 Fair in Starters and Good for reserves
7 Darrel Boone - Senior - 35/45 yet to be red shirted and with two years to go I think this is his year. Punts Returned is 50 with potential to 73. Punts inside 20 is 52. Kicking power isn't great but has some potential to get to 44% mark.
16 Josh England - Senior - 36/40 Stats suggest he's reached his maximum potential. So-So in my eyes. He'll be one of our punters for the year.
Seth Chandler - Senior (Final Year) - 33/39 Gets to start.
We need to recruit at least another Punter for the coming year.
Kickers - Roster Strength rating 37/38 Fair in Starters and Fair for reserves
8 Jay Banks - Sophomore - 26/64 His ability stats seem to contradict the scouts potential rating. But I'll give him the nod.
4 Ricardo Ingalls - Senior - 37/53 I'll red shirt him this year so that he gets to play his final senior year out. Still appears to have good potential.

Defensive Ends - Roster Strength rating 2/11 Poor in Starters and reserves
90 Clyde Baumpe - Junior - 9/20 In because he's had his red shirt.
79 J. B. DeWaters - Senior - 12/35 Again he's had his red shirt year so is clear here on in.
93 Hugh Long - Sophomere - 14/50 Anoother free to play for the rest of his time here. Has some decent potential.
92 Dana Terry - Sophomore - 6/26 who played his first season so I'll red shirth this one. Has no stamina whatsoever, nor has he got any potential to endure. I think he's clinically dead.
95 Johnny Benson - Sophomore - 7/24 Walk on with 4 years eligibility remaining and he looks to have some decent potential, more than the overall scout rating indicates. Though can't and won't cope with a pass rush.
78 Clarence Saleh - Fresher - 7/7 Walk on who will get a red shirt, he's shoite.
Defensive Tackles - Roster Strength rating 30/20 Fair in Starters and reserves
71 Joey Hines - Senior - 31/49 He has one year of eligibility left so I may have to red shirt this guy, despite heim being by far our best DT. Near enough fully developed in his individual abilities.
96 Sherman Reynolds - Senior - 23/23 Is clear to play in his last 2 years, he'll get a start. He also seems to have some more potential than his base stats indicate.
76 Shannon Samuels - Senior - 19/19 Again this guy has more potential than his base stats indicate. I'll play him this year but he'll be out for the final year as his 4 years wil then be up.
72 Stephen Riley - Fresher 2/7 A walk on guy. He'll play this season.
It looks as if recruitment of DE's and DT's is in order and quick.
Inside Linebackers - Roster Strength rating 13/18 Poor in Starters and reserves
48 Chris Byerly - Sophomore - 9/9 Probably better than suggested bu only just, I'll play him this year.
94 Jamie Devine - Senior - 21/46 Can play for the next 2 years. I don't think he has much in the way of potential to be honest.
91 Dixon Hambly - Senior - 13/26 Red shirt year so that he can play his final year. I suspect he has a bit better potential that the ratings suggest.
58 Gary Bandle Freshman - 7/21 Walk on player who will get to satrt as he has endurence if nothing else.
Outside Linebackers - Roster Strength rating 2/13 Poor in Starters and reserves
52 Spencer Howen - Fresher - 12/12 The only OLB that we have who isn't a walk on bit part. But He'll be red shirted. I believe he has huge potential way way above that suggested by the scout. Unfortunately he is pretty thick and has next to no aspirations.
57 George Colegrove - Sophomore - 9/27 Will play, he's had his red shirt year, but is only a wak on player. Has some potential.
40 Chad Lane - Sophomore - 7/11 Another walk on who had done red shirt time.
55 Randle Devin - Junior - 14/25 Walk on who I'll give a start to. Yet to be red shirted and has some potential. WIll play this year.
97 Oscar Wilson - Fresher - 5/38 Walk on with decent potential compared to the others, so he gets to wear red this year.
