What fun was had last night trawling the freebie lists and wheeling and dealing. I also completed all teh friendlies and got knocked out of the Italian Cup at the first hurdle. Things in Serie B are going to be tough if that game is anything to go by. The player movements currently stand at 13 new players signed and about 5 sold. Full details later inthe week. But I have made one complete balls up regarding the squad. I didn't know about the squad rules for the Serie B and Itallian Cup. I am left with a surplus of older players that I don't stand a cat in hells chance of playing this season due to those rules. It looks as if I'll have to offload more than I intended too, and some that I brought in may have to be loaned out if I can find clubs to take them.

So bring on the good times, we approach the first season Alghero has ever spent in Serie B full of hope but also trepidation. Would we be good enough? Probably not so I set about strengthening the squad based on a pitiful transfer kitty, It's so pitiful I choose to lower it even furtehr so that the wage budget can be increased and then set about searching for decent freebies, including players released by Serie A clubs. I also set about selling players who haven't a snowballs chance in hell of ever playing another game for us
Clearing the decks in July & August 2011:
Bozo A decent GK but not developing fast enough goes to Pro Sesto for £8k plus extras. Artificial Sweetener id the emergency RB I drafted in at the end of last season, he sees his contract run out and leaves on a free. Grilled Alice An AMR/C who hasn't developed, he wants too much money to renew his contract for his ability so he is allowed to leave when his contrcat expired. Ibson Monologue A youngster who showed promise but didn't fulfil it, is sold to Viterbese for £3k plus extras. Steamy WIndow Another young player of unfulfilled potential, he goes to Ancona for £6k plus extras. Theme Park The miserable bostord who rocked the promotion boat at the end of last season, I decide to cash in for as much as I can get, he leaves for Frosinone for £475k plus extras. Don't worry too much I think I've found someone at least as good ore even better to replace him. Even SLower Bus a young MC who hasn't a hope of getting into the squad is allowed to go to Pisa on a free. Simple Cooking A striker who found it hard to break into the squad and make an impack once he was there, goes to Avelino for £10k plus extras. Shining Teddy An AMR/ST who jus as he broke into the squad received a long term injury and never made it back, he goes to Domegliara for £12k plus extras. London Suberb A left back who has been backup for two years and will fall even further down tree, goes to Messina for £22k plus extras. Brusque Cage A DLC who wasn't going to see any action and wanted more first team football. He heads to Messina for £14k plus extras. Silky Magnum A 23 DC who we had hopes for in C2 but is never going to make teh grade in C1 let alone Serie B. He goes to Darfo Boario for £1k plus extras. Discerning Robber A DR/DM who has proved a faithful servant over the last two seasons, but has age against him and his stats have started to fall over the last season. He finishes the trio who end up at Messina for £4k plus unlikely extras.
This completes the clear out, we took £550k in transfer fees in that little exercise.
In come the replacements all Freebies
Del Monte The 34yo Mozambique striker who I'd reported on earlier, it turns out he is calssed as a 3* striker in Serie B. Good enough but not the star we thought we'd get. Chili Burger We did take him on a season long loan again, but sometime during the friendlies I decided that he could go back as we had enough players at his level and we need to cut the wages. Aero Bubble An 18yo French GK who is rated to have 3.5* potential, propbably one for the future but he is in teh U18 and U20 French international squads. Scirocco A 24yo Uruguayan AM/RC, rated at 3.5*'s for Serie B, I would expect him to see some action all being well. Full Charge 27yo Argentine DM/AMC, rated at 3.5 stars, he is good at set pieces something we have always been weak at in teh past. Victorious Friend a 20yo Icelandic International DM/MC. Rated at 3*'s Lucky Franchise A 27yo DLC, rated at 3.5*'s who was released by Galipoli. He is immediately made teh club captain and many players are pleased with that decision. Amore Target A 22yo a 3* pacey Centre Forward who should be as good as Chili Burger ever was. Released by Inter after playing only one game for them and scoring one goal. He was previously with Modena. Calamety Pane A 29yo experienced DM/MRC who was released by Palermo, he's rated as 3* and and is an athletic player. He should privide some experience in what was a young squad. Fabulous Zannucci a loyal fast 21yo striker rated at 3*, he stands 6' 3" in his stockinged feet, previously with Newcastle and before that he was at Roma. Medusa A 24yo Chilean international Striker. Rated at 3* and is a good team player, I'm hoping this guy will be the star of the show up front when he settles in. He's brave and is a good header of the ball. Mushroom Sloop 23yo AML, it turns out that his star rating dropped to 1.5 Stars immediately after he signed a contract. He'll do as a backup for a postion that we have very light cover. He might even be loaned out. Look Lively 29yo AMC from Guadaloup, he's fast and is rated at 3*'s. Serial Bigamist 26yo Luxemburg International, Rated at 4*'s he can kick with both feet and looks as if he will make the RB position his own going forward. He can play as a Full back or Wing Back on either wing. He's quite pacy but is pretty poor in teh air as he stands at only 5' 8".
That completes the transfer movements between the start of the new season up to the opening league game.
At least three other players will have to leave the club as they can't be included in the squad due to us having too many older players, these are English Mustard, Tomato Puree and Honda Advert. There are others, but I may seek to send them on long term loans unless I can find suitable 18 to 20yo's to replace them.

FZ - Nice pick up there, fella! I sent him on loan in my Newcastle save and he scored a few goals in Serie B (not sure who he went to) so hopefully he'll do the same for you this season.
A hell of a turnaround staffwise though, hopefully morale and cohesion isn't impacted too much.

Of those that went out, only Theme Park and Discerning Robber got regular games, the rest were hardly ever picked even to sit on the bench. They would have been reserves had reserves existed in Italy.
The first few games of the league season have been interesting to say the least, particularly the Home game against Lazio. I'll try to update on them in the next day or two, but we're clearing out the kitchen and dining room over the next two weeks as we are having the wall knocked through on 29th. So I may be busy.

I changed a few backroom staff including the assman and physio. Training is about the same levels as last season, but defence and attack has gone up half a star. I still limited to the same number of coaches I had on the books last year so won't be able to improve on training very much.
The youngsters that get promoted from the so called academy are still shoite at best. Nothing better than 1 star ever gets promoted form there, The academy needs improving but when we have money training facilities will be first on the agenda. We get way too many training injuries, even with the training levels set at medium.

The Friendlies
Lemona (ESP) Home, Won 3-0; Scorers Amore Target (18), OG (39), Medusa (49). Ivera (ITA) Away, Won 5-1; Scorers Full Charge (27 pen), Chili Burger (51), Shaken Not Stirred (64), Water Sauce (70), Del Monte (79). Ivera grabbed a consolation on 84. Novese (ITA) Away, Won 2-1; Scorers Calamari Cocktail (3), Amore Target (11). Novese's goal came on 9 minutes. Then came our first competitive match an away trip to Lecce in the 2nd qualifying round of the Italian Cup. Fabulous Zannucci was carried off injured after only 12 minuutes, then things got worse. Giuseppe Vives put Lecce ahead after 36 and Mesbah added a 2nd five minutes after the break. We had one on target shot all game and I can honestly say we were soundly beaten. Lost 2-0 Was this the shape of things to come?
More Friendlies
Cecina (ITA) Away, Won 6-0; Scorers Mushroom Sloop (11), Fire Lighter (19), Kimono Dragon (45+1), Del Monte (76), Machete Movie (81), Chili Burger 89. We had 66% possession and had 9 on target shots and restricted Cecina to 5 shots all game, all of them off target. Cavese (ITA) Away, Won 1-0; Scorer Stolen Book (33). We had 61% possession but only 3 shots at goal and only one on target. Crazy.
Now the real work begins with a home game against Lazio in the league.........

Dateline 20th August 2011, an historic day in the annuls of Alghero they open their Serie B account with a home game against Lazio, they don't come much bigger than that in this divison. I knew it was going to be tough but I hadn't counted on being given a mountain to climb after only sixteen minutes, yes we were 3-0 down at that point and I was considering committing Hari Kari. Lazio opened after only 2 minutes with a long range strike by Rocchi. Zarate added a second with a well worked goal on 10 and then he thumped in a 22 yard free kick on 16. We looked down and out and at that point I think most of the fans were considering what tome to start walking out, I know I was. Oh well I thought in for a penny in for a pound. We hadn't had a sniff of teh ball so out went the old instruction if you get it boot it forward Wimbledon style and get everyone forward fast. On 19 we won a corner and Finca Special floated the ball across the edge of the 6 yard box, Stolen Book timed his run to perfection and met the ball ahead of his chasing marker, a bullet of a header hit the back of the net to open our account. Lazio still looked the better team but we were creating problems when we got the ball forward and we somehow prevented them from scoring again before the break. I asked fro more atthe break and handed out some moral boosting words where necessary particularly to a nervous looking Scirocco. Something must have struck a chord as on 48 Finca Special collected the ball on the left hand side of the area and fed it straight through towards the penalty spot, who stole in to pull one back? Yes that man Scirocco. We were in with a shout and Lazio started to look nervous. On 66 Calamity Pane hit a through ball and Finca Special blasted it against the keeper, the ball bounced out and Medusa got there ahead of 3 defenders to slot in the equaliser. By this point the crowd was ecstatic and so was I, who would have dreamed of holding the mighty Lazio to a draw after going 3-0 down. We hoped for more, but that hope was in vain, Lazio rallied somewhat and held on to take a point. Drew 3-3
After the game Tomato Puree was sold to Messina for £10k plus extras.English Mustard was sold to Cisco for £40k plus extras and Lost Saint went to Ancona for £7k plus extras. There were still others to be moved on and we were actively looking for buyers. As it turned out just before teh next game we offloaded Mouth Hamster on a season long loan to Rimini.
Our second game was an away trip to the team that finished one above us in Serie C1/A last season, SPAL if we were going to beat anyone I think we had to beat them and so we did with a Stolen Book header from a Finca Special corner after only 6 minutes. It was a repeat of his effort against Lazio. Finca Special missed a penalty after 38 minutes. We had a lot of possession but didn't get the ball in the box enough to add to the score. Won 1-0
Land Agent was sent on a Season long loan to Olbia.
Our third game of the season saw us travel to Mantova and once again Stolen Book opened our account this time on 24 and yet again it was a repeat of his previous two goals, a header from the edge of the 6 yard box, froma Finca Special Corner, it was our only on target shot of the game. Lucky Franchise was taken off injured after 37 minutes. We paid the price for not creating enough on 71 when Mantova equalised with a 25 yard curler. Drew 1-1
Next up was Bologna at home and we looked vulnerable, they took the lead on 16 when Appiah split our defence with a through ball, Scaloni put the finishing touches to the pass. On 25 we equalised, Pasta Packet's deep cross was drilled in by Scirocco who had drifted in behind the defence unseen. Song Chong Gook put Bologna back in front from the spot on 72. On 78 we were level again as Medusa pounced on a poor back pass and slotted the ball past the stranded keeper. Then teh unthinkable happened, Calamari Cocktails through all was hit on off the keeper by Medusa to give us the lead with 4 minutes to play. We couldn't hold onto teh lead though and our defence fell apart with a minute of normal tiome left, Stephen Appiah put the finishing touches to a through ball, he looked suspiciously offside to me. Drew 3-3 We were equal to Bologna as far as possession goes but we only had 4 on target shots to their 11.
Maybe moving back to a 4-1-1-2-2 formation with wingers has reduced our shooting opportunities. I'm not sure moving back to last seasons 4-1-2-3 would serve us well though this season and I have made a special effort to get some wingers into the squad, so I guess I should persevere with them.
We are currently in 9th place on 6 points.

I'm not too despondant but I do feel I need to find better defenders as we look a little fragile in that department, unfortunately the ones available that might improve the squad aren't interested.
We have Parma at home and Empoli next and I have a feeling chickens will come home to roost soon.
If you'd said at the start of teh season that we'd have 6 points after 4 games I'd have taken it and I'm still happy to have those 6 points.

Nice start. THere was almost more wins in that bunch too. Still, results like that form a basis for the rest of the season. Does no one want to come in on loan for the defense?

The next game was expected to be a toughie, we would meet Parma at our place and tough it proved to be. They got off to a great start notching one on 5 minutes, eight minutes later we were 2-0 down. The scoring stopped for a while, but they picked up the pace again on 75 to make it 3-0. Del Monte grabbed a consolation on 77 when e collected a long ball from Full Charge on the edge of the area and took one touch before blasting it into the left corner. That result had been coming for a while. Lost 3-1
A few days later we traveled to Empoli and got another lesson in how to play. Van Den Boogart opened for them on 11 and Marianini added a second on 33. We struggled through the rest of the game and Kimono Dragon notched a consolation on 88. Lost 2-1
On 24th September lowly Ancona paid us a visit and if we were to get things back on track then this was the time to do it. Unfortunately Ancona shocked us with the opening goal on 9 minutes a long ball split the defence and Curiale finished with ease. On 17 Armore Target bundles the ball in from a corner to equalise. On 41 Del Monte finished off a defence splitting pass from Calamari Cocktail to make it 2-1. On 66 Armore Target got his second and our third when he collected another defence spitting pass by Calamari Cocktail and unmarked he thumped the ball under the keeper from 12 yards. On 76 Ancona made things interesting when Tarnana cracked a belter from the edge of our area, but we dug in to hold onto all the points. Won 3-2.
Four days later we signed up a 19yo Right Back named Creche Stalker on a free transfer, He's not particularly developed yet but he has potential to be a 3* full back. I been needing some sort of young cover for Serial Bigamist as I can't register anymore players over the age of 23.
Moving into October we first traveled to Chievo and as usual went 1-0 down, this time we lasted 19 minutes. Gianneti plating a parried shot into the net as Stolen Book decided to run away from the ball for some reason. Never Mind we were level within 2 minutes, Armore Target clinically finishing a Del Monte through ball. On 36 Del Monte lobbed the winner over an advancing after collecting a long ball from pasta Packet. How the goal stood I'll never know, Del Monte was at least 3 yards offside when the ball was played over the top. I'm not complaining, I'll take whatever points come our way. Won 2-1
We now had a two week break as we had 4 players on international duty.
The break ended with a home game against promotion challenging Lecce and as expected the game went their way. Tonetto scored the only goal of the game when his floated cross fooled everyone including himself and floated into the net 1 minute into the second half. Lost 1-0
Next up was an away trip to mid table Frosinone, they opened on 32 Caetano collected a through ball and scored from 6 yards. We equalised on 52, Del Monte ran onto a long ball from Serial Bigamist and slotted in from around 12 yards. A former player Theme Park was sent off for arguing with the ref, he claimed it was offside, he's already been booked 3 minutes before the goal and got a 2nd yellow. Despite the numerical advantage we couldn't improve on the score. Drew 1-1
Triestina were our guests in the next game, they were on the edge of the promotion race and we expected a hard game. What we got was a thriller. Calamari Cocktail claimed his first goal of the season on 31 with a crashing 18 yard drive. On the stroke of half time Triestina won a corner and equalised with a near post header. Straight from kick-off in the second half Triestina broke down the right and a cross was finished off by Pani. On 57 Medusa equalised from 18 yards after being put through by Sirocco. On 77 Zandi reclaimed the lead for Triestina collecting the ball from a goalmouth scramble and planting it firmly beyond the reach of Hard Pad. On 86 another through ball from Sirocco was collected by Medusa and lifted over the advancing keeper for an equaliser. Drew 3-3
The final game in October was a trip to Modena who stormed into a 1 minute lead straight from kick-off. Medusa equalised on 13 after being put through by Calamari Cocktail. Two minute into the second half and Modena were back in the lead an 18 yarder by Troiano doing the damage. Five minutes from time, Calamari Cocktail hit a long ball over the top, Fabulous Zannucci raced onto it ahead of the defence and hit a rising unstoppable shot for the equaliser. Drew 2-2
We continue to hover around the mid table mark as long as we don't hit a bad patch we should be safe from relegation, but there doesn't look to be the required quality in the side to push for promotion.
During the month we picked up another freebie Right Back, a 27yo Czech named Widow Krankie, unfortunately due to his age and our over 23 allocation being fully loaded I couldn't register him for any games before a clear out in the January transfer window.

As November opens we are joined by free signing 25yo Spanish striker Biblical Afterthought, a Spaniard who will bide his time in getting to a match fit level until January. He's rated at 3.5 Stars and is at his full potential. I've half an eye on selling Del Monte in the transfer window as he hasn't really set us on fire and at 34 I don't really want him in the team next season, so it makes sense to cash in if we can. I also have half an eye on offloading a lot of fringe players to cut the wage bill. Our first game in November is at home to Cremonese, They batter us from start to finish, but on 39, Medusa collects from Calamity Pane and lamps an opener from 22 yards. Cremonese are stunned, but the come back at us. We hold on and hold on and hold on. On 85 Finca Special splits the defence with a through ball and Kimono Dragon runs on to score from 8 yards. On 92 minutes Cremonese finally make a break through, Jurgen Pandiani heading in a cross at the near post, but it's nothing more than a consolation. Won 2-1Another 2 week international break gives us time to rest up a bit before our next home game against relegation threatened Reggina. On 8 minutes Calamari Cocktail slots the ball in from 8 yards following a Del Monte pull back. Reggina then proceed to boss the game without scoring except from an own goal near post header on the stroke of full time. Won 2-0. A midweek game at Vicenza proves to be a hard one. They take the lead on 37 after a shocking goal kick by Hard Pad is mis controlled by Luck Franchise and their forward nips in to slam home from 25 yards. Medusa equalises on 65 after winning the ball about 22 yards out and slipping past 3 defenders to drive low under the keeper. Drew 1-1The final game in November is away to Piacenza and there is only one goal in the entire game, it goes to them on the hour, a cross that wasn't dealt with is headed home from 6 yards out. Lost 1-0Into December we go and we entertain bottom of the table Arezzo, I tell the team I expect a win. We are 2-0 down by the 13th minute from goals on 4 by Croce and 13 by Oliveira. Victorious Friend pulls a goal back with a far post header from a Calamari Cocktail free kick. Martinetti restores Arezzo's 2 goal lead on 56. On 77 Armore Target splits the Arezzo defence and Del Monte pulls us back to within a goal. With the fans streaming out of the ground and 5 minutes injury time played, Del Monte hits a long ball towards the edge of their area, it finds Medusa who hits it first time and we have pulled off an incredible draw from the jaws of defeat. Drew 3-3Away to Sassuolo who are around the same position in the league as us, a tight game is settled by a 6 yard Medusa goal on 19 following a through pass from Victorious Friend. Won 1-0The final league game before the winter break is away to bottom of the league Reggiana, it rapidly becomes a walk over as Armore Target hits a hat-trick with goals on 1, 14 and 46. To complete Reggiana's day the have a man sent off 2 minutes into first half injury time. Won 3-0We have 2 friendlies before the end of the year. The first is at home to Kavala and ends 1-1 with Cast And Go scoring our only goal after 55 minutes. The second is at home to Austrian Side GAK, it's mental as we romp to a 7-2 win. Goal Scorers are Machete Movie (8), Lucky Franchise (9), Biblical Afterthought (36 & 66), Medusa (49) and Del Monte (76 & 83). GAK scored on 58 and 72. That ends 2011, The month has seen a lot of activity in the transfer stakes as I've looked to offload a lot of fringe players to make way for signings over the last couple of months. The League Table as at 1st January 2012Oh and we landed another freebie in December, a 26 year old 3.5 star rated Spanish MC called Singing Bear. He looks damned useful and put in a fine performance in the GAK game.

So as a result of a lot of wheeling and dealing in December, the January transfer window opens and sees us offload 8 players:
30yo AM/FC Look Lively head to EMoli for £275k plus extras. 22yo FC Pecking Order goes to Catazano for £20k plus extras. 25yo GK Stop In The Name Of Love heads for Celano for £10k plus extras. 24yo AML/ST Mushroom Sloop goes to Scafatese for £35k plus extras 24yo RB/MC Tetchy Fly is sold to Alto Adige for £40k plus extras 30yo ST Water Sauce heads to Celano fro £55k plus extras 34yo FC Del Monte is sold to Empoli for £45k 23yo ST Honda Advert goes to Messina for £9k plus extras.
Our opening game in January will be at home to Gallipoli, in the meantime I am still looking to brng in more new faces if they will improve the squad and cost nothing to sign. At this point we are around £3.5k over the weekly salary budget.

January got off to a great start as we hosted relegation threatened Gallipoli ( I thought that was in Turkey?). The first goal took a little time coming but when it arrived it started an avalanche of goals packed into a 31 minuet period in the game. Mesdusa opened on 33 after being put through by Biblical Afterthought. Gallipoli equalised on 43, but Armore Target put us back in the lead within a minute after being fed a neat ball by Biblical Afterthought. A minute into the second half and Medusa had his second goal after being put through by Calamari Cocktail. Armore Target made it four on 52 when he poked home a parried shot from Medusa. Gallipoli then joined in on the act and pulled one back on 59. On 64, Calamari Cocktail fed a ball through for Biblical Afterthought to join the celebrations. Then everything just settled down for the rest of the game. Won 5-2Mid table Ravenna were next at their place and a 0-0 bore draw ensued. The only highlight was that they were reduced to 10 men 8 minutes from the end. Drew 0-0. What followed next was embarrassing, a trip to runaway leaders Lazio. Goals from 5 different players on 25, 34, 44, 50 and 67 ensured that we wouldn't have any say in that particular match. We were totally outclassed. Lost 5-0Two new freebies joined us: God's Beer: a 26yo Spanish DM/MRC who is at the top of his game with a 3.5 star rating. He had been released by Espanyol at he end of last season. Don't Kiss Me: a 20yo English DC who again is at the top of his game with a 3 Star rating. This is a player I'd had on my radar for a while but he'd refused to sign in the close season after being released by Chelsea, he must be desperate for money now. Hopefully a home game against last seasons Serie C1/A champions would enable us to recover somewhat. We did somewhat with goals from Medusa on 25 and Finca Special on 45. I let the ass-man do the half time team-talk to some extent and SPAL pulled a goal back on 55, but we held out to win. It was the start of what was to become a festering problem at the club. won 2-1After the game Victorious Fried blasted me for the halftime team talk claiming that I should have used a different approach. Unfortunately there is no provision for disciplining a player for blasting you in public it seems. So I transfer listed the ungrateful bostord and offered him up to other clubs for £1.5M. Padova came in with an offer for £925k, which I refused but in hindsight should have took. He moaned about not being allowed to move clubs and I reduced his squad status. He can rot on the fringes for a little while, for fooks sake what does a 20 year old know. To end January We traveled to Bologna and not surprisingly lost to an injury time goal when it looked as if we'd grabbed a point. Lost 1-0So despite up and down results we were maintaining our mid table position.
