No flag, no. Despite the line judge standing watching with a disapproving look on his face. The whole game was like watching a series of muggings. Right now it's hard to determine whose importance is being more enriched by their absence: the proper referees or Sean Payton.

That's funny. Silly question, but was there a flag for that? Here's the wider version, giving you a better shot of either the field judge or line judge ignoring the fight happening right in front of him.

That soundbite Roger dropped about how the replacement referees are not affecting the outcome of the games just got stuck in his throat.
Players from pretty much all teams around the league are blowing up and the NFL's going to have to fine all of them... which coincidentally will probably pay for the extra the refs want.
Suddenly Roger's brilliant plan is revealed!

So if your opponent intercepts the ball, but you wrap your arms around him, then you'[ve tchnically caught the ball and it's a TD?
Gotcha.

Tanier has left Football Outsiders, but he's still being funny out there. The Gangam style bit can be skipped, but The Longest Day part was a good read. "A few minutes later, the Chiefs got the ball back, Shaun Draughn caught a short pass and bounced the ball off the turf while getting tackled. Roman Harper scooped the ball up and ran into the end zone and -- this is the funny part -- the replacements actually called it a touchdown. Draughn couldn’t have been more down if you buried him at the beach."

And this week's replacement referee play of the week : WWWWWRRRRROOOOOOOOOONNNGGGGGG!!!! My youngest is a Packers fan. I asked him yesterday if he'd watched Monday night's game yet. He said he hadn't. I told him it was probably for the best. I also enjoyed the NFL's statement that they'd looked at the tape of the play and determined that the onfield officials had made the right call (other than missing the hilariously blatant OPI before the "catch"). Because of course they did.

You had money on Green Bay too, Hornet?

I did not. As I think my picks in the Ron Mexico Trophy prove, at this point of the season I know three-fifths of fuck-all about any of the teams in the league, certainly not enough to be betting.
I do know the Jets suck, though. Revis :moop:

Well, from the point of view that the Jets have lost one of the five best players in the league, yeah. From the point of view that they weren't going anywhere this year anyway (especially given that they're playing the unexpectedly frisky NFC West), maybe not.

Just noticed this from Michael Lombardi's column on nfl.com:
"» St. Louis Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola is going to make a ton of money as a free agent in the offseason. His quickness is hard to cover. If the Rams hadn't cut current Cincinnati Bengals receiver Andrew Hawkins before the 2011 season, they would have two of the quickest players in the NFL on their team. "
Wes Welker out of contract in the summer, Amendola a Josh McDaniels receiver in St Louis... am I reading too much into this?

Good news! The refs are back!
Bad news! We're going to have less to complain about!

I love the comments regarding the returning refs. Are these the same refs lambasted week in week out every other season?
also love some of the player comments, particularly the one that said "the most popular sport in the world should have professional referees". Why he would be talking about Soccer in a week the referees returned to the second most popular sport in the US I don't know, but it's appreciated.

I thought the referees not wanting to go full time professional was one of the things they were fighting about...

It was - they don't want to go professional, they don't want to give up their pensions and they want the union to retain the power over suspension due to poor performance.
As Meatloaf said, two out of three ain't bad.

Couple great moments from the Pats game yesterday... Firstly, Brady wasn't happy when a booth review went against them... And then there's this : Notable mostly for the commentary that went with it when commentator dude said "to be fair to Vince, he thought Jones was carrying a cake."

It was a hell of a hit by Vince. To be fair, I'm not sure I would want to get on the bad side of Mrs Wilfork either, she looks like she could hit you in a similar fashion.
Mind you, some people would pay good money for that.

Just listening to an nfluk podcast and one of the guys said Hartline got 253 yds in receiving. I thought it was just one of those slips of the tongue.
Holy shit.
I don't recall seeing a number that high before, that's ridiculous.

Yes - he's the franchise record holder now and Tannehill beat the rookie passing yardage record of some guy called Marino, or something.
I was stunned to see Hartline go crazy like that too and when I heard it was the franchise record I thought it sucked that it wasn't Duper, or Clayton or Nat Moore any more.
Then I found out the previous record was actually held by Chris Chambers.

The Jets were entertaining last night - some plays with one QB, some plays with two QBs and lots of plays with no QB (hoho!). Plus lots and lots of confusion about what to do when, where and with whom that led to a twelve-men-in-the-huddle penalty, a huddle with only ten men in it and two second half timeouts spent to avoid delay of game.
I especially liked one play where they sent Tebow in, Sanchez started to trot out and then was sent back in, then they broke the huddle with something like six seconds of playclock left, which meant that Sanchez had to snap the ball on what was a sneaky screen to his wide receiver - a defensive back - before that receiver had completed his motion, which blew up the timing on the play and then Sanchez threw it wide and low anyway.
In pre-season the Jets made the media turn off the cameras for large sections so they could practice their "Wildcat" without tipping the league as to their new secret weapon and, as yet, they apparently haven't used that package.
Tony Sparano ladies and gentlemen!
