Griffin's knee collapsing yesterday nearly made me cry. He shouldn't have been on the field in the second half, you could tell he was struggling.

Snyder spends billions on his players and then nine dollars on his playing surface. His field broke Chris Clemons too.

I have to admit that I've been expecting Peterson to end up the same way this year.
I think the desperation of Washington to have a winning season was clearly underlined by him going down like a sack of uncomfortable looking spuds. Lets hope Griffin hasn't damaged his knee in a way that he'll pay for in years to come like QB's such as Cunningham, McNair, McNabb.
Not holding Shanahan at fault, I think it was a collective mentality thing.

Apparently Skip Bayless was being a dick about this as well, as he tweeted that the surgeon who had been asking RG and the Redskins to take it easy put doubt in the players mind and that caused all of this. Linky linkySkip currently gets paid for his expert analysis and insight.

Bayless is a moron of the highest water.
I like it when they have Jalen Rose on, because Rose doesn't take any of Bayless' nonsense.

Not holding Shanahan at fault, I think it was a collective mentality thing. Surely, as the head coach, Shanahan's at fault for that culture, then?

I think it goes way beyond the team, it's a fan / Washington franchise thing, and it starts with Snyders failure to deliver anything over the years (apart from serially concussed QB's) and the promise of signing Golden Greats like Gibbs to deliver sweet FA.
Griffin wanted to be on the field, Snyder wanted him on the field, Shanahan wanted him on the field, pretty much every Redskin fan wanted him on the field.
His Doctor wasn't convinced, and I would usually err with the Doctor.
I can't imagine what would convince Shanahan over the Doctor other than Griffin himself or Snyder.

Yeah, but at some point someone has to go "THE GUY CAN BARELY WALK" and pull him.
As the head coach, Shanahan's responsible. If not him, wtf is he doing there?
"Well, the guy's head was severed and the Seahawks had kicked it through the uprights for a drop goal but jeez, his torso just looked like it was ready for another go on special teams so I thought hey, who am I to argue with a headless torso?"

Yeah, all the new rules designed to reduce the number of concussions and stop players who've been concussed going back in are implicitly acknowledging that players can't be relied upon to look after their own long-term best interests. So Shanahan coming out and saying that Griffin wanted to play is disingenous and irrelevant.
Quite aside from the long-term damage he might have done to a player that his franchise mortgaged its future to get, it was pretty clear by halftime that Griffin couldn't run and couldn't pass. He should have pulled him just on the basis that that gave him the best chance to win that game.

I'm with Elth here, sometimes you have to put your sensible hat on and just pull the guy. THe Trilby might not be the popular decision, but the clown wig will make you look like a fool eventually.

So we all agree that it was a stupid thing?
Excellent. I just blame everybody, not just Shanahan.

But isn't Shanahan the HC? Isn't that his job to make that sort of decision? It seems to me he was wearing his clown wig with a four-leaf clover stuck in it.

Was Bill at fault most of all for Gronks broken arm? Is it only an issue when the potential for something bad to go wrong actually takes place?
Shanahan should have pulled him, but didn't but the fact he was even in the game at all and the fact that they were in the play-offs, and the attitude in the NFL towards establishing new standards of grit and glory (Hello Emmitt Smith and his shoulder) shows that there is a collective attitude in the NFL of 20:20 is nice, but what about the big W!

Late in the game is was 14-13 Washington, so I'm not surprised he was still in there, with the Racists still winning the game. I think once it goes to 21-14 Seattle you have a reality check at that point, as it's clear Griffin just doesn't have it and now you need a touchdown or you're done. Griffin had said that even if Shanahanahananan had pulled him from the game he would have ignored him and run out there, but I agree that that's sort of the point of a HC. He should have yanked Griffin and, if necessary, taken his helmet away from him so he couldn't go back in. Amusingly, the Washington baseball team have a hot young pitcher called Stephen Strasburg and with the playoffs in reach this year the Nationals just stopped playing him, because they'd decided before the season how many innings they wanted him to pitch and he hit that limit. The Nats lost in the first round of the playoffs to St Louis and the town went absolutely nuts about the decision to protect Strasburg... now they're going absolutely nuts about the decision to not protect Griffin. Fun.

Gronk - the difference was, Dave, that Gronk wasn't carrying an injury, Griffin was obviously hurt in the second half way before his last play and as he couldn't really plant his feet to throw because of his knee, he was a liability, IMO. With Gronk's arm, he was part of the special teams as normal and yes, I agree he should probably have not been on that play as we were way up at that point. A better Gronk argument would have been in the Superbowl loss last year. You could tell after a couple of series he just wasn't right and the ankle was a problem. In that instance, he wasn't effective because a lot of his game is getting away from the line and catching a ball, in reality he was nothing more than a lineman of which we had others and I wouldn't have risked him further.
I only hope for Griffin's sake that his bravado isn't going to knack his career. I also hope for the Redskins that them not pulling him when it was obvious isn't going to knack their franchise.

He went on a 9 yard "run" where he was clearly struggling to stay upright. At that point, any sort of responsible adult has to go "no, wait, this isn't good enough."
Now he's probably out for the 2013 season.

I've just read an NFL.com story on that, it's very disrespectful. And, it's also adding fuel to Ray's fire, like he needs any.
