Because, obviously, what this forum needs is three seperate threads about the fortunes of my 3 MP teams.
Anyway the 49ers are the team in the NAFL which uses real life rosters (well , approximations thereof, and teams. I took over the 49ers entering free agency before the draft and they're pretty decent I must say. Despite a 3-13 record suggesting otherwise
Anyway, I made a right pig's ear of the draft, because I had to rely on stupid preference lists. I did grab the player I wanted with 1.5 which was the best part of the whole draft. I got me a flashy running back, Antonio Pedigo, to, hopefully, replace Barlow with sooner rather than later. He looks a lot better than the other stud running back who was on offer but who mysteriously was taken at 1.4 so that's all good. As long as he doesn't bust.
Apart from that I adopted teh Horn's talent over need axiom in taking the best tight end in the draft at 2.3 - he also looks a bit of a stud but he won't see that much playing time this year, although I'm planning on running quite a few 2 tight end sets to a) accomodate him a bit b) shorten our passing game down, and c) improve the running game.
And the rest of the picks were a complete waste of time who won't even get to stay on our already packed roster beyond training camp. I'm particularly disgusted with my 2.16 pick which, barring a boom, was a horrible waste of the decent 3rd receiver I traded away to get it. Bleh! The preference list thingy really shagged me up.
Anyway, I have cunning plans for the team, involving converting a young safety into a cornerback and switching to a bump-and-run based defence to give my massive defensive line a bit of time to get to the quarterback. We get to see the players we drafted this evening and I'm dreading the results to be quite honest. In every draft there normally averages about 1 first round pick who turns out to be completely ker-rap (Ryan Leaf). So as long as Pedigo and Cato (TE chappy) don't bust too badly I should be alrightish.

Nice work, Narkle, keep us informed. I'm sure now that s1ugt and Hornet are back, they'll "advise" you on how well you're doing.

I am vee nervous about the draft results which will be coming out tonight. In a way, because I drafted for talent instead of need, I'm not a hostage to the results of the draft like some people are (the person who drafted a running back at 1.4 for example, who doesn't have any running backs at all to speak of if that guy busts, or the guy that traded away half of his future picks and some players to get a quarterback at 1.1). On the other hand it will be a bit wank to draft for talent and then find out that, "oh, wait a minute, they don't have any".
A nice boom of some description lower down the draft order would be nice as well, to justify too much time spent poring over a preference list and winding up with players I didn't really want all that much anyway. Otherwise I'll have to pack them off to the glue factory early.
I've learned my lesson now though. If the opportunity to trade up using lots of lower round picks pops up, grab it immediately. I missed out on two opportunities to trade up in the late 1st/early 2nd and I could really have done with the inside linebacker/guard that doing so would have provided me with. At least I managed to magically transform a late 4th and early 5th into a future 3rd round pick. Probably not a good deal according to the draft value chart but I sneeze in the draft chart's general direction. Aithchoo!

Aye, Talent is what it is. On Madden06 I had two of the top safeties (both 90+ something), but when it came to the draft there was a 6'4 240lb monster on offer in the early 2nd round with the kind of basic attributes that'd make him a solid Linebacker and stand-out Corner.
Traded up to get him. Repaid my faith, was immense at stopping the runner.
My 6'8 340lb DE who moved as quick as most linebackers, was my other drafted pride and joy. Not that I needed him at the time, but in 3 years you knew he'd not just be 'good' but bloody unstoppable.
Talent > Need
Unless you can get Talent in Need slots.

Ha! My draft wasn't too bad. No major busts - although the 2.16 I was bemoaning picking was a near major bust, but remained a minor bust instead. However if I change him to a defensive end he will be pretty decent actually. One of my lower picks (a DE as it happens) boomed a fair old bit as well, which was nice.
Not so nice was the veteran busts that went on - including one of my DEs losing 10 points (out of 100, pretty significant), and my secondary has been swept by a rash of lesser drops. So that was a bit w4nk.
Still by runningyback and tight end didn't bust so that's nice. Admittedly my scout over-valued them a wee, wee bit but I can live with that.

Meh! My running back chappy looks like he isn't quite going to be as fantastic as I hoped and we are thinner than Kate Moss on coc ..., oh wait, thinner than Kate Moss at linebacker - although I'm hoping a trade will help us out in that respect. I've decided that the draft was a pile of poo after all.

You're shit. You're Swedish. And you're getting the sack.
Wow. Spooky similarities between you and the bespectacled England manager...

I'll be more than a bit happy if I manage to emulate the degree of "failure" shown by the person to whom you compare me.

My preseason is going swimmingly as we're currently 0-3 and our offence has racked up a massive 17 points in those 3 games. The league trembles in fear before the slumbering giant. And, no, I'm not talking about Boony.

At least I'll be able to grab a decent quarterback if that's the case.
Unfortunately I don't think my team is bad enough to grab a first overall pick. My abysmal pre-season is (partly) down to me avoiding another Culpepper situation and consequently sticking all my starters in the reserves. Bizarrely it's the most skilled roster of all my MP teams, so I ought to be 12-4 this year. I'm not going to be though. Which is annoying.

And so we're ready to face the season opener in Arizona with a sense of confidence imparted by a 0-4 pre-season record behind us. Now we've got the league lulled into a false sense of security we can go for the jugular. Like a rabid, erm, lickle fluffy lamb! Awwwwwww!
