No, actually it isn't the Dolphins. Allow me to present to you the University of Central Florida Golden Knights. History. The University of Central Florida (commonly referred to as UCF) is a university located in Orlando, Florida. UCF is the largest undergraduate school in the state of Florida, the second largest school-including graduate programs, and is the sixth-largest university in the nation. The UCF varsity athletic program originally began 1979, initially in Division III. It later moved to Division II in 1982 and Division I in 1990. In 1996 the Knights made the move to the top level of American College sports, joining Division I-A and featuring a young Quarterback called Daunte Culpepper. Culpepper smashed all of the Golden Knights' records and also set the single season NCAA record for completion percentage, (beating Steve Young), while earning the Sammy Baugh award for the nation's top quarterback. After Culpepper left for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings the Golden Knights saw their record slip year by year to the 2004 season, (this year (oh yes it is)), where they won an impressive zero games, going 0-8 within their conference and 0-11 overall. Still, the Knights' problems are over, because I'm in charge now. NotesThis is played on Solecismic's Front Office Football : The College Years and players who progress through the game will be imported into Front Office Football 04 for drafting into the NFL.

Current Roster
The Stars 53 : Center - Reed Thurman - Senior (5)*. 49 : Tackle - Ian Gador - Senior. 49 : Defensive Tackle - Allen O'Donnell - Senior. 44 : Cornerback - Roger Finks - Senior. 43 : Safety - Steve Gardner - Senior. 42 : Running Back - Jorge Barnes - Sophomore. 42 : Inside Linebacker - Brian Nelson - Senior.
The Black Holes 1 : Tackle - Herb Gardner - Sophomore. 4 : Cornerback - Karl McKeefry - Freshman. 4 : Tackle - Courtney Bath - Sophomore. 5 : Defensive Tackle - Timothy Richmond - Sophomore.
Yes, my worst player is called Herb Gardner. You can do your own jokes.
*How the college system works Collegiate athletes have four years of athletic eligibility during which they may appear for the collegiate teams (football, in thie case).
The years are reported as follows :
1 = Freshman 2 = Sophomore 3 = Junior 4 = Senior
After completing four seasons of play, an athlete may not appear for that team again. (Even if they only play one down in each of the four years.)
However, a player may be "Red Shirted" which means that he cannot play at all during that season and that year of athletic eligibility is preserved.
So, you may recruit an excellent Quarterback from High School, but already have an older Quarterback who's going to play every game. In this case you'd "Red Shirt" the young guy - he wouldn't be able to play for that whole season, but his second year at the school would be his first year of athletic eligibilty.
This saves you "wasting" year where a talented player is sitting on his hands.
You can only Red Shirt a player once.
In the list above Reed Thurman is listed as a "Senior (5)" because he was Red Shirted at some point in his career and so is in his fifth year at the school.

Staff
College Athletic Co Ordinator Damon Wilkins.
36 year old Damon Wilkins is the school's athletic co-ordinator who is "Good" at helping to maintain the player's academic eligibility and "Decent" at investigating issues, problems and misdeeds from players and staff.
While his inability to find out what you've been up to is a plus, he's only "Poor" at bringing donations into the school, which is going to make it difficult to keep the Head Coach in gin.
Offensive Co-ordinator Sherman Berry
The 52 year old Berry has a reputation as a coach for developing players within a pass-first system, with "Terrific" Quarterback development and an "Excellent" rating for Receivers. Unfortunately, he's "Lousy" when it comes to Offensive Linemen and Kickers.
He's also Lousy when it comes to play-calling, which is kind of important for an offensive co-ordinator, and he also has a reputation for having an abbrasive personality and for pissing people off.
Defensive Co-ordinator Horace Henderson
The 47 year old Aliteral Henderson is "Excellent" at developing Defensive Linemen and "Good" with Defensive Backs, but is only "Poor" with Linebackers.
Fortunately he's good at keeping his players conditioned and working the injured back to fitness.
The Scouts Outside of the coaches the most important staff members are the scouts who are out watching the High School players, helping me to pick our next set of players.
As a Florida school, the South East is our most important region - trapping high rated recruits is going to be difficult for a school with our low reputation, so we have to play on geographical preferences and hope to grab good players from Florida who want to be able to take their laundry home at weekends.
Our South East scout is Roger Singleton who is "Excellent" at spotting Defensive Line recruits and "Pretty Good" when it comes to Receivers and Kickers.
He's terrible at spotting Running Backs. :moop:
Elsewhere, Northwest coach Dwight Pearce is "Terrific" at spotting Quarterbacks, Runningbacks and Defensive Linemen and "Excellent" at spotting Defensive Backs. He's our best scout, which is handy as he's in the geographic region in which we have the least pull - we'll only really get players who are on the run from the police.
Marlon Parker works the South West and is "Terrific" with Receivers and Defensive Backs and Mid West Coach Hugh Worley gets the same rating for DBs.
Brandon Brigance is an "Excellent" scout across the defensive positions for the Deep South, while Harris Frederick and Nolan Gonzalez have the Offensive Positions covered for New England and the Great Lakes.
Finally, Randall Bushell is the scout for the Mid Atlantic area and I hope there's no good players there, because he's awful.

Schedule
Before I arrived at UCF the folks in charge had already set a schedule for the coming season :
1 - Bye 2 - at Wisconsin (17) 3 - WEST VIRGINIA (47) 4 - at Penn State (13) 5 - Bye 6 - at Buffalo 7 - NORTHERN ILLINOIS 8 - AKRON 9 - at Miami of Ohio 10 - at Marshall 11 - OHIO 12 - at Ball State 13 - Bye 14 - KENT STATE
Nothing like starting the season with a bye. I'm sure the team are all tired after all that time off. We then go into three games against ranked teams; top-and-tailed by road games against the Badgers and the Nittany Lions, both of whom are put in the pre-season top twenty.
For comparison the UCF Knights are ranked an impressive 85th in the pre-season predictions.
Roster Breakdown Senior - 29 Junior - 11 Sophomore - 16 Frshman - 13
Almost half (29 of 60) of our players are due to graduate at the end of this school year, leaving the team unlikely to challenge next season as a Freshman-heavy class comes through. Fortunately, we won't be building any false hope by competing this season, as we're not exactly an awesome football machine this year either.

Starting Lineup
Quarterback Brand Fisk - Junior - 37/53.
As a Junior, Fisk has two seasons remaining with the team, but the good news is that he's already the best passer on the team, even though he's competing with two fifth-year seniors.
Despite being better than everyone else, he's been buried on the depth chart. He's a philosophy major though, so he should be stoic about that.
Good at passing short and deep, but not inbetween and decent on third down.
Runningback Jorge Barnes - Sophomore - 42/74
A Sociology major who's also studying Latin... err... Anyway, he's great on third down and has the potential to be a good short yardage back and kick returner.
Dennis Kirk - Senior - 28/28
Sophomore Sedrick Horton is actually the second best back on the team, but I've redshirted him so that I can use Kirk to back up Barnes in his final season of eligibility and then bring in Horton as next year's backup.
Tempted to make him a team Captain, just so I can make Captain Kirk jokes.
Fullback Van Bironas - Freshman - 23/55
Our Offensive Co-ordinator runs a single back offence almost exclusively, so being the best Fullback on the team is a bit of a pyrrhic victory.
Van "The Man" is a journalism major, so he can write about how unfair it all is.
Wide Receiver Darrell Dinh - Junior - 35/70
A gazelle - 6'6" and can run all day. Avoids fumbles well too. But best of all, he has a girlfriend call Lynn. If they get married, she'll be called Lynn Dinh.
Marco Heath - Junior - 39/39 The other half of my giant wideout pairing, as Marco is 6'5". Decent at avoiding drops, but doesnt' have much else going on.
Majors in Astronomy which is fair enough, but has a minor in Fire Walking... what the fuck?
Is second on the depth chart to Dinh because his girlfriend is called Fiona Smith, which doesn't lead to any jokes at all.
Tight End Bruce Hancock - Senior - 40/40
A good run blocker, but gets out of breath putting on a hat. He's also likely to drop the hat several times. Is studying law though, so I'll be sticking to purely factual statements about Bruce.
His girlfriend is called Trixie and is moderately attractive.
Center Thurman Reed - Senior - 53/53
A Marketing major, which means I'll be killing him as soon as possible. Equally above-average at both run and pass blocking.
Guard Cory Schnieder - Junior - 39/51
Primarily a pass blocking lineman who needs to seriously work on his fitness, the fat fook.
Dean Flowers - Junior - 32/32
Another pass blocker, but this one has done some work in the gym, so might actually get through more than two plays without needing a lie down. Wants to be a Social Worker when he grows up.
Tackle Ian Gador - Senior - 49/49
I thought Gador was something that went off whenever Baz was about, but apparently not. Gaydar is a good runblocker - a road grader as they call them - but with a major in Music and minors in Social work, Journalism and the performing arts he's clearly a useless ponce.
Charlie Ciarleglio - Sophomore - 20/40
Very fit but at the moment he's all potential and no talent.
The high school he comes from has an academic reputation of 1. Out of 100.
Punter Tony Arnott - Senior - 31/31
I'm not sure why I want two punters, especially when one of them is so bad that Arnott gets to start. His girlfriend is called Toni, which is going to get confusing.
Kicker OJ Olmstead - Senior - 20/35
Stop me if you've heard this one, but I'm not sure why I want two three kickers, especially when one two of them are so bad that Olmstead gets to start.
Has a strong leg and can kick the ball into the parking lot. Just not through the posts on the way.
Girlfriend is called Jannine, which offers no visible humorous potential.
=======
We'll have some defence tomorrow.

Starting Lineup
Defensive End Victor Parrish - Senior - 35/39.
A mix and match guy who's average at most things. Majors in geology, but minors in Professional Wrestling.
Need to remind him not to hit Quarterbacks with metal chairs.
Gino Sandmeyer - Senior - 34/34
A good run defender who isn't going to add much to the pass rush. Has lousy intelligence, which will explain why he's majoring in drama with a minor in... wait for it... basket weaving.
Defensive Tackle Allen O'Donnell - Senior - 49/64
This position is the strength of our defence, so we'll be playing a 4-3. O'Donnell is a typical run-stuffing boulder in the middle of the defence, although with the combination of his poor intelligence and his subject choices at the school, I may have to schedule more tutoring for him so that he maintains the NCAA's academic eligibility.*
Devin Huffman - Senior - 37/62
Very fit and a decent pass rusher up the middle. It's irritating though that both tackles have lots of potential left but are leaving the school after this season.
Linebacker Brian Nelson - Senior - 42/52
The inside backer on the team, Nelson is a good man-to-man pass defender, which will be handy for covering pass-catching backs, but also has a good line in pass rush.
Ellis Shepherd - Freshman - 10/54
Normally I would red shirt Shepherd for his first season, so that he can expand into some of that potential, but the rest of the outside backers are so shite, that there's little point.
Has the potential to emerge into a solid all-rounder, especially as he's my most intelligent player in the front seven (72/100).
Donnell Mock - Senior - 24/24
Benjamin Curtis should actually be a starter on the outside in front of Mock, but Curtis is dumb as a bag of hammers, with an intelligence rating of zero. He'll fail all his classes and be ineligible before you can say "you're a bg stupid head."
Mock is fit and a decent run defender, but shouldn't really be starting.
Cornerbacks Roger Finks - Senior - 44/44
A good corner in both man-to-man and zone schemes and a good special teamer too. Unfortunately he's completely out of shape and probably won't manage three plays back-to-back before needing a breather.
Peter Gibson - Senior - 37/54
Gibson isn't quite as good as Finks, but is roughly four brazilian times fitter and can also cover in both schemes.
RED SHIRT Isaac Henry - Freshman - 7/62 Already in good shape with a decent eye for the ball, Henry has the potential to turn into one of those cover corners everyone loves so much, with a 77 potential for man-to-man cover.
He'll be sitting watching this season so that I can get four years out of him from next season.
Safeties Steve Gardner - Senior - 43/57
Steve is 5'11" and 186lbs, while his brother, Herb, is 6'4" and 274lbs. No prizes for guessing who was first in the queue for lunch at the Gardner home.
Steve is a very solid all-rounder, but is going to struggle academically. So it's lucky he's studying telemarketing and basket weaving.
Craig Czarnecki - Senior - 36/36
Polish, much? Czarnecki is a decent run defender, so he'll be the Free Safety, I guess, if only by default. Smarter than Einstein's lovechild with Maggie Philbin.
Has a girlfriend called Mary Anne Johnson who's going to have fun learning how to spell her new surname.
RED SHIRT Winston Flannery - Freshman - 14/58
Already one of the fittest players on the team and has the potential to develop into a fantastic all-rounder, if the scouts are right. Will sit this year out and then form an invinceable duo with Isaac Henry. Mainly because Isaac and Winston are great names.
Winston is majoring in Dentistry, which is going to open up an infinite number of jokes when he knocks out a few receiver's teeth.
Academic Eligibility - The NCAA makes a notional nod toward a player's education being important by requiring them to hit a certain grade average before they're able to play. Players whose grades slip beneath that threshold are ineligible for their football team.
This is why football players often take more "comfortable" minors like basket weaving, to keep their grade average up. Although I would think that Fire Walking isn't graded, it's probably pass/fail - either you got across or you died in the fire.

Recruiting unlike the NFL where players are drafted onto a team, the College programs live and die by their recruiting. They contact players in their last year at High School and offer them cash, cars and hookers educational incentives to join the team.
The bad news is that if the people you contacted and offered all decide to go somewhere else, you end up with no new players. At all.
With this is mind it's very important to contact players that you have a real chance of recruiting and not waste time on glamour guys who are never going to consider attending your college. This is especially important for UCF this year as we have 29 seniors.
There are four grades of recruit :
Green : Green players are either of ability matching to the reputation of your college, or they have some specific reason, (like distance from home, (or desire to learn basket weaving)), to join your college.
Blue : Blue players are borderline. Either they're slightly better than your school can regularly recruit, or they are of similar ability, but have reasons to not come to your school.
Red : Red players are unlikely to come to your school because of specific academic or distance reasons, or because they're considerably better than your school's prestige level.
Gray : For UCF, Gray players are usually the best High School players, heavily recruited by major college programs and therefore only likely to join UCF if encouraged. With a sack and some chloroform.
Targets Before our week two opener in Wisconsin, I scoured the High School senior lists, narrowing my search to only Green and Blue players, as there's little point gambling on Red players when I have so many seniors.
Toby Reade - Tight End. Reade is ranked 671 in the nation for High School players and the 16th best Tight End in the country. He's the number one TE prospect from Florida.
GPA = 2.98. (All "A's" = 4. All "C's" =2)
Miami of Ohio are sniffing around and their Algebra program (Reade's desired major) is much better than mine, but they're 804 miles away, while I'm right on Reade's doorstep.
Tommie Myers - Safety. Unranked overall in the nation, but 66th on the Safety list. The 3rd best Safety out of Florida.
GPA = 3.56.
A B+ student, Myers is also considering an offer from South Florida, but our German department is better than their's.
Ike Clarke - Wide Receiver. 874 in the nation overall, 75 among Wide Receivers. 9th best receiver from Florida.
GPA = 2.99.
Is being chased by much higher ranked schools, but we have a couple of players from his High School already on our roster, so he's happy about that.
Sadly, Vanderbilt is rated 91 in Clarke's major; Accountancy, while we're rated only 33.
Cory Atcherson - Inside Linebacker. Aiming for a banker here. 96th nationally among Linebackers, but fifth from Florida.
GPA : 2.70.
Has other offers, but we're the best school on his doorstep. Sadly, he doesn't like our Defensive Co-ordinator.
=========
There were several others, but no on really noteable yet.
Coming up next.. we lose to the fearsome Badgers.

Central Florida 16 Wisconsin (17) 42Central Florida 7 0 3 6 - 16 Wisconsin 7 7 21 7 - 42 The 17th ranked Wisconsin Badgers got their 2004 season off to a winning start with a comfortable win over the visiting Knights. UCF didn't get off to the most auspiscious start when they were offside on the opening kick off - just the opening marker of a long day for the Floridians, who spent the game chasing Badger MVP Charles Grzecki. Grzecki finished the day with 246 yards rushing on 32 carries and four touchdowns; three of which came in a third quarter that saw the home team score 21 unanswered points. UCF's Jorge Barnes had a solid game, rushing for 75 yards on seven carries and scoring the Knight's opening touchdown. Quarterback Brand Fisk completed 15 of 22 passes for 146 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Fisk's main problem was an offensive line that allowed him to be sacked six times. West Virginia (39) 59 Central Florida 28 West Virginia 10 28 14 7 - 59 Central Florida 14 0 14 0 - 28 This game was a simply brutal reminder that we're nowhere near the top college teams at the moment. The offence managed just one of the four touchdowns scored, with the other three coming on two interceptions and a kick return and the team's first eleven drivers resulted in three punts, six interceptions and zero points. For the visitors, Myron Parham became the second running back to win MVP honours against my so-called defence, racking up 153 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. UCF's bright points were Brian Nelson and Craig Czarnecki who scored on interception returns of 80 and 79 yards respectively. Peter Gibson set a school record when he returned a kick off 101 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. [/size] Quite why Fisk was given four awards for being sacked five times and throwing six interceptions is anyone's guess.

Central Florida 10 Penn State (10) 51Central Florida 7 3 0 0 - 10 Penn State 7 23 7 14 - 51 On the road to the 10th ranked team in the nation, there was only ever going to be one winner. Thankfully, this concludes the out-of-conference section of our schedule and from now on out we play against teams who are still likely to beat us, but not in the fashion of the last three weeks. In such a one-sided game you take small victories where you can, so the highlights were : No 100 yard rusher - Christian Stanton led the way for the Nittany Lions with 64 yards. Admittedly he only took five carries to get those yards, but I did mention small victories, right? Five sacks - Cornell Cassidy and Brian Nelson both notched two sacks, while Gino Sandmeyer grabbed one for our most successful day rushing the passer. Jorge Barnes - The sophomore running back looked decent again, putting up 61 yards on 11 carries against a pretty good defence. After three games, the current rankings are : 01 Oklahoma 02 Miami 03 Ohio State 04 Georgia 05 Nebraska 06 Florida 07 USC 08 Penn State 09 Alabama 10 Wisconsin
---------------- 106 Central Florida ---------------- 125 Spokane Two Florida teams crack the top ten and ultra-surprisingly; we're neither of them. We're just 19 positions off being the worst team in College football.

Recruiting
Recruiting continued apace each week, as we attempted to badger people into coming to UCF next season by visiting their houses and phoning them incessantly.
Tight End target Toby Reade asked me to stop contacting him after I showed up on his doorstep three times. He did it politely though, saying that he "felt he knew enough about UCF to make a proper decision now."
Let me down gently, eh?
With that, interest moved to Wide Receiver Ian Griffin. Griffin is a gray, which suggests there'd normally be no chance of me landing him, but he has UCF listed as his favourite school evar! So I had a punt at him and he agreed to come and look at the school. He's ranked as the 61st best receiver in the country and the 8th best in Florida. If we land him it'll be a real coup.
We also started to contact red player Sedrick Bates. Bates isn't ranked nationally, but he's the 8th best Outside Linebacker from Florida, so he'd be a great addition. Rutgers and Utah State are sniffing around, but Bates wants to be close to home and those schools are 1070 and 2140 miles away, while we're just 183 miles down the road.
Also on the speed dial is Safety Clarence Banks. A blue candidate, Banks is the ninth best Safety in the nation and the best in Florida. A couple of days spent in the bushes at the bottom of his garden watching him eat breakfast suggested he was a better player than my scout told me.
My postman groans under the weight of the offers I'm sending out in the mail, as I try to get people signed up before the real colleges appear.
