The Dolphins have signed Wide Receiver Chad Johnson who was released by the Patriots this morning.
This could be a one-year band aid the Dolphins need after giving away Brandon Marshall for two third rounders. If he stays healthy he'll be the best receiver on the team, but I don't think he'll be better than Marshall. Chad +two 3rds might be better than Marshall though. Maybe.
The good news is that the Dolphins have agreed to do the reality show Hard Knocks this year, so Johnson will get lots of attention.

Good thread.
The Patriots signed Jake Ballard yesterday, even though he's knacked and it appears he knew nothing about it as he turned up at the Giants training camp expecting to be signed.
Bill - just a weird guy.

Not sure if Ocho has anything left in the tank.

He was apparently a "workout warrior" and very good teammate at Foxboro, he just couldn't grasp the Patriots' four-read receiver tree. So it's not the "tank" I'm worried about. Especially when looking at Miami's other options... Hartline - a prototypical #3 receiver forced to spend a career in the #2 position and Bess - possibly my favourite Dolphin, but a poor man's poorer cousin's Wes Welker.
Hopefully Miami can accommodate Chad's abilities as a receiver, by drawing giant fooking X's where he's supposed to run. No one will work out what we're doing, provided no one films our practices or something.

An awful, utterly untrue and clearly mischievous rumour I've read is that HBO leaned on Miami to sign him so the Dolphins had someone to be good TV in camp.

Our current owner sold minority shares to the Williams sisters, Ricky Martinez and Gloria Estefan so that he had celebrity "owners", so I wouldn't be surprised to find out that that's true.

So the Hall of Fame "game" has been played and the proper pre-season starts on Thursday. We've been training with the Saints this week and play them tomorrow, which is something we've done before. I personally think that it's a great idea. You can have so many training sessions and prep for a lot of things, but when you#re up against different people, it'll test you more.
In other news, would any of us be interested in some sort of NFL prediction thing? I wouldn't have it through a site like ESPN, as you're all shite at doing that. What I'm thinking is each player takes turn to pick a winner from a game, the other players get the other team. If the picker gets it right they get 2 pts, the others get -1 pt, but if the picker gets it wrong, they get -1pt the others get 1 pt by default. Each player picks two games and we rotate the pick selection every week to make it fair.
Dunno, just putting it out there.
If there is a bit of interest, I'll have a look at doing something, we have a few weeks.

Or... eight games per week to predict, each game has 12 points assigned to it and everyone who gets the right result splits the points... so if there are 6 players, if all 6 get it right, they get 2 pts each, 3 players would get 4 pts and when Stu picks Miami to beat Buffalo and the rest of us laugh, he scoops the 12.
That might be interesting...

That sounds all right actually.
Can I put 1-0 for all the games?

No. And I am very much in favour of the "split points" way of doing it, as I have worked out how to do the calc. Also, we could sort out the games now and just rattle everything off and be a bunch of lzy pantfeesh for the rest of the season.

I'm game. Although I've hardly kept up with the offseason at all and have no bloody idea who's going to be any good next year. Although a hilarious Jets implosion by around week 8 is probably a good bet.

Nice work, El Pres, but I'll take the under on week 8. Right, I'm making an executive decision here. We'll predict eight games each week, and so we don't have anyone bickering as to which games I'm choosing, if we all pick one team that we want to predict on, they will be included every week. Then because of bye weeks and the occasional match up between our teams, I'll choose the Sunday night late game and a couple of the tight games (according to the bookies) to make up the eight games. I'll start off a new thread to get some interest going and to make up some rules. In the meantime, I will say that Moo, Stu, ElPresoo are deffo in. I think The Bairn (who hasn't been here for a while) might play this too. I'm hoping Elth/Sonic/DC/Coffers would be interested as eight would be a good competition. Six would be doable, I think, but as usual the more the merrier.

Football Outsiders had this to say about the Jets : I feel like just completely omitting the Jets from the column would have been a merciful act. I'm tired of hearing about this team already, and it's August 6 as I write this.

What's the best way of handling a mentally fragile young quarterback whose contract has just been extended at questionable expense? Why not try signing a hugely polarising figure who was one of the few people in the league who was even less impressive passing the ball last year, along with his travelling media circus and guaran-fucking-teeing yourself a quarterback controversy before the season even starts? Fucking GENIUS.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson was being held on $2,500 bond Sunday on a domestic violence charge after his wife accused him of head-butting her during an argument, police said. Is it too late to pick another team? Edit : The Miami Dolphins have terminated the contract of WR Chad Johnson. Well at least there's that.

If you're a good offensive coach who knows who to hide a Quarterback's blemishes then you can get another team to overpay for him?
Good news for Andy Reid. Less so for the Cards.

I always end up looking at the NFL.com power rankings even though I know they're a whole load of shite. Glad I looked today though, especially at #19.
