And so the season dribbles to a close. Down on the field in a Colorado snow flurry Denver Quarterback Marlon Reagles takes a knee to run out a 20-10 Bronco victory, the home fans cheer, our players stroll onto the field for desultory handshakes with their opposite numbers and just like that 10 months of effort, blood and in some cases broken bones is done with.
The Oakland Raiders have paid $144,000,000 to garner four wins and the right to throw ridiculous amounts of money at the first overall draft choice in April.
For a while it appeared we'd be picking third as after a standard loss to the division-leading Chiefs, we flew all the way across the country and somehow beat the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay was 7-7 at the time, but we were more interested in the Dolphins and Lions who fell below us as the gun sounded on our 20-17 overtime win.
Unfortunately, (fortunately?), when we fell over in Denver seven days later, the Phish and Lions beat the Jets and Titans and we were back picking #1 again.
There were a couple of players who came out of the 2012 season with some pride - Nathan Sewell put together his first career 1000 yard season as he finished with 1,027 at 4.52 a carry and added 488 receiving yards too. This despite the team finishing 30th in the league in rushing yardage.
We finished fifth in passing yardage, most of which went to Ronald Curry who caught 59 passes for 926 yards and four touchdowns. He could have easily broken through the 1000 yard barrier, if only he hadn't dropped a team-leading 13 passes.
On defence Safety Bernard Pollard led the team with 109 tackles, (and 40 assists), and pleasingly rookie defensive tackle Karl Brooks led the team in sacks, with four. Defensive End Lee Small took a fantastic 21 quarterback hurries and somehow turned it into only 1.5 sacks.
Kirk Morrison and Tyvon Branch led the team in interceptions with four each.
Our defence finished 28th against the run and 18th against the pass.
