Nathan Vasher came through as "Hard to Read" while Chris Gamble is "Underrated."
Further down, CB Derrick Strait has an adjusted combine rating of 5.6, but my scout says he's "very underrated."
Gamble is shown as a man-to-man specialist with good play diagnosis and an excellent eye for the ball and big plays, while Strait also rates high for play diagnosis, but is better in run support - pairing him with last year's rookie Terence Newman and his 49/70 for run defence would give me a humorous pairing of physical corners.
What would also be funny would be drafting Kellen Winslow Jnr to play double Tight End all day with him on one side and Antonio Gates on the other.

Dallas gave away their kids and kidneys to move up to get two picks in the top 13 and added pretty nicely to their defence :
1. New York G - Turner, Michael, RB, Northern Illinois 2. San Francisco - Roethlisberger, Ben, QB, Miami, Ohio 3. Arizona - Wilfork, Vince, DT, Miami, Florida 4. New York J - Rivers, Philip, QB, North Carolina State 5. Houston - Parker, Willie, RB, North Carolina 6. Denver - Losman, J.P., QB, Tulane 7. Dallas - Vasher, Nathan, CB, Texas 8. Minnesota - Gamble, Chris, CB, Ohio State 9. Oakland - Dansby, Karlos, OLB, Auburn 10. Washington - Milligan, Hanik, S, Houston 11. Buffalo - Kelly, Tommy, DT, Mississippi State 12. Jacksonville - Gallery, Robert, T, Iowa 13. Dallas - Lavalais, Chad, DT, Louisiana State 14. Cincinnati - Geathers, Robert, DE, Georgia
Disappointingly I thought there'd be more focus elsewhere and there might be a chance of one of the CBs falling to me, but they went 8/9. Gamble is particularly annoying as my scout said he was underrated and, like Carson Palmer, he's gone to Minnesota, so I'll face him twice a year.
Losman in Denver is a match made in heaven - I wish McDaniels was in charge in this game.
Dumb move of the day is the Niners sitting at #2 instead of trading out and taking Roethlisberger the year after they picked a very serviceable Byron Leftwich. Sometime soon they're going to have to let one of those two go and I'll be warming up my chequebook, ready.
From what's left, Larry Fitzgerald is very tempting and Kevin Jones is showing as "very underrated." Jones went to Detroit in real life too, of course, so that'd be nice. Eli Manning is still out there and my scouts suggest he's slightly underrated...

You still have a nice choice there and as you say, there's a chance you might be able to nab one of the 49ers QBs soon. Is it worth jumping at Fitz now?

I might go Fitzgerald, just because Jones' scouting is showing that he's pretty good at almost everything, without being exceptional anywhere. So not quite big enough to push the pile, but not quite fast enough to escape outside either.
The good news is that as a bit of protection against the CBs not falling to me I signed four in free agency, of various utility, and a Safety who wasn't rated very high, mainly because he doesn't hit hard, can't play zone and doesn't have great endurance, but his man-to-man and bump-and-run stats are both above 90.
I gave that Safety a "flat" offer which worked out to be about $1,000,000 lower than the deal Jacksonville had on the table, but mine was considerably better for him in the first two years of the deal - the money he's actually most likely to see - so I'm pleased the game AI recognised that.
This gives me a bit of flexibility to chase other things. I should probably find some fat offensive lineman after our run game was so dismal last year, but where's the fun in that?

probably not much fun.
In other news, where's Hornet?
In other other news, I hate you for doing one of these historical type games, makes me want to do similar, but it's probably wise I don't as I'd just end up signing Maroney and Edelman again. It's making a good read though, seeing where players like Wilfork, Rivers and Losman are going to ply their trade.

So here's the rest of round 1... see if you can spot what I did.
15. Detroit - Fitzgerald, Larry, WR, Pittsburgh 16. New Orleans - Scanlon, Rich, ILB, Syracuse 17. Cleveland - Williams, D.J., OLB, Miami, Florida 18. Baltimore - Schaub, Matt, QB, Virginia 19. Tampa Bay - Winslow Jr, Kellen, TE, Miami, Florida 20. Tennessee - Bell, Tatum, RB, Oklahoma State 21. Chicago - Davis, Anthony, T, Virginia Tech 22. Miami - Locklear, Sean, T, North Carolina State 23. San Diego - Boulware, Michael, S, Florida State 24. Carolina - Watson, Ben, TE, Georgia 25. Seattle - Earl, Glenn, S, Notre Dame 26. Detroit - Jones, Kevin, RB, Virginia Tech 27. Pittsburgh - Jones, Julius, RB, Notre Dame 28. Green Bay - Johnson, Al, C, Wisconsin 29. St. Louis - Schweigert, Stuart, S, Purdue 30. Indianapolis - Snee, Chris, G, Boston College 31. New England - Harris, Tommie, DT, Oklahoma 32. Philadelphia - Hicks, Maurice, RB, North Carolina A&T
Yes, I took Fitzgerald and then sat watching picks tick by with no one going for Kevin Jones immediately. With my scout suggesting he was very under-estimated I got more and more keen to nab him.
Looking down the lists of who was picking toward the end of round 1 I could see Carolina might take Jones, in which case I would just move on, but after that Seattle and Kansas were both set with Shaun Alexander and Priest Holmes.
Then there was Pittsburgh whose offensive backfield featured the comedy stylings of Rodney Peete at QB and Richard Smith, (?), at HB. It was a dead cert they'd go for a HB, so I got on the blower to Kansas and gave them my 2, 3, 4 and 7 (705 points of value) for their 1, (700).
With the next pick Pittsburgh picked Julius Jones, who my scout didn't like. Here's hoping I got the right Jones.
Sadly no one wants to bite on my old HB, Richard Huntley, so I won't be able to trade him away to move back into the 3rd or 4th round.

Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Harrington, Joey 19 QB QB 3 38 48 5 yrs Carr, David 14 QB 3 17 41 1 yr. Ragone, Dave 2 QB 2 17 53 2 yrs
Doug Flutie retired after the season and while I had a weird fever dream in which Eli Manning fell into the lower half of the fourth round, I'd already traded away all my picks until the fifth, so I just missed him. So this will continue to be the Joey show, with a bunch of Davie Rags thrown in in pre-season to see if he can develop. The empty husk of David Carr is given a new one-year contract mostly because he keeps the flies away from the other players.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Huntley, Richard 20 RB RB 9 48 48 2 yrs Jones, Kevin 45 RB 1 42 47 4 yrs Fargas, Justin 25 RB 2 27 30 2 yrs Schlesinger, Cory 22 FB FB 10 39 39 5 yrs
Kevin Jones popped from a 38/43 pre camp to a 42/47 and looks like he'll be solid, but I probably overpaid for him by trading back into round one to pick him. The only good news is it looks like he'll be better than Julius Jones, who went to Pittsburgh one slot later. Julius is rated higher, but that's almost entirely because of his Getting Downfield and Third Down Catching rating. I don't think he's going to do a job for the Steelers actually, y'know, running the ball. Huntley and Jones will split time, but I will be actively shopping Huntley about for anyone who's interested.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Gates, Antonio 81 TE TE 2 71 71 4 yrs Santiago, O.J. 16 TE 8 42 42 1 yr.
Gates is turning into a beast, provided the coach remembers to actually put him on the field. With better receivers elsewhere Gates could be freed up a lot.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Crowell, Germane 89 FL 7 51 51 2 yrs Coles, Laveranues 82 FL 5 49 49 1 yr. Hakim, Az-zahir 86 FL 7 47 47 1 yr. Fitzgerald, Larry 83 FL FL 1 45 73 4 yrs Drummond, Eddie 85 FL 3 28 40 5 yrs Morton, Johnnie 88 SE SE 11 43 43 1 yr. Jenkins, Michael 80 SE 1 25 42 3 yrs
Yes I signed Horn's friend Lavvy Coles and then drafted Michael Jenkins in round six with my last pick in the draft. Fitzgerald and Morton are the stories here though : Can Morton get back-to-back 1000 yard seasons and can Fitz develop his weakest rankings - avoiding drops and adjusting to the ball, both of which show potential to end up in the 80s.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Raiola, Dominic 50 C C 4 58 58 4 yrs Smith, Brent 62 LG LG 8 47 47 3 yrs Joyce, Matt 67 LG 10 30 30 1 yr. Carey, Vernon 66 RT 1 23 48 3 yrs
I think I may have made a fifth round steal in Vernon Carey and the rest of it here is decent. There's a bunch of blocking strength, which should hopefully raise our rushing game from 32nd.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Allen, Matt 6 P 3 41 41 1 yr. Hanson, Jason 11 K 13 70 70 5 yrs Scobee, Josh 8 K 1 51 71 1 yr.
Eh. Lost John "Joan" Jett in Free Agency and Allen was the best of a terrible bunch of punters available. Scobee will probably only handle kick offs, as has a leg that could put footballs into orbit. Around Mars.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct McGinest, Willie 96 LDE LDE 11 43 43 2 yrs Edwards, Kalima 79 LDE 3 27 39 3 yrs Hall, James 70 RDE RDE 5 52 52 4 yrs De Vries, Jared 71 RDE 6 33 33 5 yrs
Fast Willie McG is signed for veteran presence and to maybe play Weak Outside Backer in a switch to a 3-4. De Vries will back up all over due to his insane stamina.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Rogers, Shaun 93 LDT LDT 4 59 59 4 yrs Elliss, Luther 73 RDT RDT 10 61 61 2 yrs
I'll be watching other team's waiver wires for an extra body here, but if they stay fit I'd be happy with Rogers and Ellis facing every snap this year. If we switch to a 3-4 then we'll always have a fresh, high talent Nose to play.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Kriewaldt, Clint 56 MLB MLB 6 62 62 4 yrs Claiborne, Chris 99 MLB 6 52 52 2 yrs Johnson, Ted 97 MLB 10 40 40 1 yr. Hillenmeyer, Hunter 58 MLB 2 27 37 2 yrs Rudd, Dwayne 94 SLB SLB 8 55 55 3 yrs Curry, Donte 98 SLB 4 33 41 5 yrs Favors, Greg 54 WLB WLB 7 43 43 3 yrs
Kriewaldt and Johnson were free agency grabs to add some talented depth in the middle with Claiborne if I need two ILBs for a switch to 3-4. Favors is terrible at pass rushing, so he'll switch somewhere else in that set, with Donte Curry possibly moving to Weak, or Willie McGinest dropping off the D line.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Harper, Nick 21 LCB LCB 4 50 50 1 yr. Newman, Terence 39 LCB 2 44 44 2 yrs Goodman, Andre 48 LCB 3 15 31 5 yrs Moreland, Earthwind 27 RCB 5 44 44 1 yr. Harris, Walt 43 RCB RCB 9 35 35 1 yr.
I went a little mad in free agency with corners, meaning that my cohesion will be garbage again, but maybe I can resign one of the one-year players. If I'm honest, I did only sign Earthwind Moreland because of his name. Although he is rated over 90 for interceptions, so I intend to play him in a lot of Nickle and Dime and reap the inevitable rewards.
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Doering, Jason 37 SS SS 4 52 52 5 yrs Walker, Bracy 32 FS FS 11 37 37 4 yrs Mikell, Quentin 46 FS 2 15 28 2 yrs
Doering is a weird one as he's got no run support or anything else you'd expect from a Safety, but his man to man and bump and run are both over 90. This means I can double cover sometimes without throwing an extra defensive back on.

McGinest DE 21 6 2.5 6 0 0 81.4 93 S. Rogers DT 16 12 2.0 6 0 0 81.1 Well that was terrible. Opening with a win over Favre's Packers seemed promising, but it was one of the few bright spots in an opening half to 2004 that saw us go 2-6. Then, with the season virtually over and nothing to fight for but a good draft pick, the second half of our season finished 5-3 for a 7-9 record and another middling draft selection. With two games to go our 6-8 record still had us in the hunt for the playoffs, due to some very average records elsewhere and a 20-13 win in Tennessee - one of only three losses the Titans suffered in 2004 - meant we could get our first non-losing record since I took over too. Then the Bears destroyed us 37-3. Three losing seasons on the bounce now, 6-10 / 7-8-1 / 7-9, which means that as I'm playing on the hardest level we're entering the area where I am in genuine threat of being fired. Something that burns me even more is that I'm wasting the best years of Joey Harrington's life. This isn't a sentence any real life football fan would expect to utter, but Harrington was brilliant this year, completing almost 66% of his passes, (382/580) for 4,060 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. This was despite an injury to Larry Fitzgerald that saw the first round draft choice miss 11 games. In his absence Johnnie Morton put in his second straight thousand yard season and Germane Crowell rose from the dead to break a thousand yards himself and score eight times. Lavvy Coles was the solid third option we'd hoped for all year and Tony Gates was utilised a bit more too. Sadly our run game vanished for the second year running, leaving Harrington without any support. With three games to go we were 32nd in the league for rushing yards per game, recovering with three strong efforts to finish 28th. Kevin Jones looked solid - a grinder rather than a big play merchant - but our offensive line was too uneven. Even without Center Dom Raiola breaking his foot and missing ten games we just didn't have enough of one thing or the other... with stamina rotating linemen in and out we'd often have three linemen who were good run blockers, but two who were dreadful, so our line would collapse somewhere. On defence things were boom and bust too. We finished 31st against the pass - largely because we have no cohesion in the defensive backfield thanks to the high player turnover there, but 7th for turnovers forced and Earthwind Moreland tied for the league lead with 8 interceptions. This off-season I need to sign a bunch of good fat guys and try to re-sign as many of my defensive backfield as possible to finally get some cohesion going.

Here's a look at the first round this year. Barron is red for speed, strength and agility, meaning if he's not massively overrated then he's going to be someone's starting tackle for a very long time indeed. I certainly won't get a sniff of him, picking #12. Just off-screen are Quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Alex Smith who were the glamour boys of this draft in real life. Smith went first overall and then everyone sat around joking about how sad Rodgers looked, sat in the green room as team after team passed on the chance to pick him. Who's laughing now, eh?

It's hard not to try and go for the guys that did so well IRL, I would imagine. Michael Roos, DeMarcus Ware, Shawn Merriman, are you thinking? You need help on your o-line you said, but Roos is a tackle and not really what you need, is he? You're after more of an interior guy? Is Demarcus Ware on your list?

You need help on your o-line you said, but Roos is a tackle and not really what you need, is he? You're after more of an interior guy? Is Demarcus Ware on your list? It might be difficult if I had a better team, but I can't afford to be picking on sentiment right now. You're right that we're pretty set at Tackle and would love another offensive line position, but unbelievably this year is practically all Tackles in the draft. 9 of the top 10 and 12 of the top 15 rated offensive linemen are Tackles and there are no Centers in the top 20. I was thinking of pulling a "Billy" and trading down to acquire extra picks around the 3rd round and just puff out the line with a lot of bodies, but the options just aren't there. So, if one of the Cornerbacks falls to me, I'll go for them as they're priceless. If not, then maybe Aaron Rodgers, despite Joey's excellent play. Roos is an option, because I could always play him at RT and move McDougle inside to RG. McDougle has middling experience at Guard, but that wouldn't take long to bolster and he is a strong, run blocker first and foremost. One person I won't be picking is Matt Cassel - my scouts say he's overrated and has a red flag for personality issues. So the Radiers can have him.

So is it the corners that are causing your pass defence to be so cack, or is it that the QB has enough time to read a Dr Seuss book before throwing?

The cohesion of my pass defence, really. I had a bunch of players on short contracts when I took over and then signed a bunch of players on one year deals to paste over the cracks a year later.
As a result my defensive backfield don't really recognise each other - cohesion is probably the biggest issue in the backfield on defence and my is 47/100 whereas the rest of my units - Passing / Offensive Line etc.. - are all in the 70s or higher. I just need some stability back there.
This year I'm going to have Doering, Walker and Newman all back, which will help and if I can re-sign Earthwind "AnFire" Moreland, then it should help.
But good cover corners are almost impossible to get a hold of, so if one falls to me, I'll take him.

Hey! Look who has the worst defensive backfield cohesion in the league! Finally, we're the best at something! Our Passing Offence has dipped out of the 70s because Johnnie Morton has selfishly decided to retire after back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons.

So is this really something I should be looking at too? Is it that important? I've been looking at my squad and getting younger players with similar/better stats than the vets, but is there a case for keeping a 40/40 10 yr vet rather than recruiting a 45/45 4 yr player, just because the 10 yr vet has been on your team since he was drafted?

If you call up the personality page and he's a mentor and he's in an area where you have weak cohesion, then I'd keep a 40/40 over a 45/45, yes. Or try to sign both.
Mid-70s cohesion clearly didn't affect my passing game last year, what with two thousand-yard receivers and four thousand yards from Joey, but I really like cohesion as high as possible in the offensive line and from the defensive secondary.
People who've played the game more than I might tell you it's not that important, I don't know, but I always felt that if you can't be super-talented, (and the list of All Star Corners is shorter than the list of Cliff Richard's girlfriends), then at least get a group who know where to be without thinking, because they know each other.

And by pulled, I mean gone home with Kansas City. Yes, I didn't get the prettiest Offensive Lineman at the ball as he turned me down to sign a longer deal that considerably more backloaded. My deal was a larger bonus, (the money he gets to keep all of), plus front loaded into the early years of the deal, (the money an old geezer is most likely to see). But I guess he wanted to "win" ... whatever that is. I'll have my coaches look it up in the dictionary. I did, however, get to hook up with the prettiest offensive lineman's fat friend. I really wanted to sign brawlers this year with high blocking strength, but signing Roberson and re-signing Stockar McDougle away from a serious poaching effort by Carolina will have to do. I also resigned Nick Harper and Earthwind Moreland at Cornerback, which will help with that cohesion stuff and Lavvy Coles got a sneaky last minute offer after Isaac Bruce turned us down and will be back next year too. Up next, Coffer's favourite part... a nap in front of Country File the draft!
