Probably what I expected. You have a reply to it.
And was I right with 10-6?

2005 then.
It started well. I'll give it that.
We opened with a win at home to the Vikings and a loss away to the Steelers, both by single field goals, then improved to 3-1 before receiving a frankly baffling 30-0 drubbing at home from the Bears. It was such a bizarre result that it didn't even trouble me. It was clearly just one of those games where everything goes wrong and the only lesson that can be learned is "shit happens."
I consoled myself with wins over Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Carolina to go 6-2 at the turn.
Joey Harrington was throwing the ball around like the second coming of Dan Marino, Kevin Jones was crushing defenders and the combination of Larry Fitzgerald and Antonio Gates was proving undefendable - if the opposition did cover them then we had Lavvy Coles, Germane Crowell and sixth rounder Michael Jenkins to chip in. We were proving too deep at receiver for a lot of teams to deal with.
When the second half of the season started with a tight loss in Green Bay I wasn't too concerned - Brett Favre hadn't even reached his first retirement at this point - and besides we followed with a win in Minnesota to improve to 7-3.
That was the fourth straight game against the Vikes in which Carson Palmer had won Game MVP. Minnesota were 1-3 in those games.
Unfortunately in that win Harrington picked up a groin injury, (presumably hip-thrusting in Carson's face), and Cornerback Nick Harper had to go on injured reserve with a bad ACL injury.
A clearly slowed Harrington did enough to earn us a tie against the Ravens, in a game we would almost certainly have won, save for Frank Gore's only fumble of the season, which came 11 minutes into overtime with the ball on Baltimore's 22.
After forcing the Ravens to punt on their subsequent drive, Joey Heisman got the ball back with virtually no time on the clock, dropped back to try a deep pass and was crushed, busting his MCL and losing the rest of his 2005 season in the process.
This is where the Alex Smith-inspired tailspin kicked in and we dropped from 7-3-1 to 7-6-1 as Smith threw an impressive 10 interceptions in three games. Losing 41-30 to Chicago was especially embarrassing, as we wanted revenge for the earlier shut out and with their starter injured, the Bears featured a wounded Kerry Collins under Center.
Not to worry though, as Smith threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.
Then at 7-6-1 Smith finally clicked, of course, and threw four touchdowns to only one interception in a 30-18 win over Cincinnati which meant that a win in our final game coupled with a loss for Arizona would put us in the playoffs.
We promptly did our part, beating Green Bay 26-17 thanks to a 100 yard, two touchdown game from Kevin Jones, but above the stadium the scoreboard showed ARI 31-17 STL.
If we'd beaten the Ravens our conference record would have put us in in front of the Cardinals. But instead we finished 9-6-1 and missed the playoffs by a half game.

OMG! I almost called it! Unlucky though, fella. So what are the plans for the offseason? Get better players? You should have put some money on it. The Americans love gambling. Thoughts for the off-season really have to be to continue to improve the defensive secondary and to find a strong WLB to rush the passer. Outside of that we'll be controlled by retirements and whether we can get Jeff Backus to sign a new contract, or if we have to find a new Left Tackle.

Our weakness is primarily on the other side where Harper and Newman are both better in run support than in man to man, which is kind of a problem for cornerbacks. 2006 has a few potentially decent corners - Mike Huff, Donte Whitner, Antonio Cromartie and Devin Hester - but this is the year of Reggie Bush and Mario Williams. Pro Football Reference put Hester as the third best player taken in this entire draft, behind Haloti Ngata and, taken 60th overall, Maurice Jones Drew.

Vanessa Williams might fall to me at #23. As for needs... look at my drafts so far : QB : 2 (Rounds chosen in : 3/2) RB : 3 (4/1/3) WR : 2 (1/6) TE : 1 (1) OL : 5 (5/5/1/5/7) DL : 1 (6) LB : 1 (7) CB : 2 (2/4) SF : 1 (6) Safe to say I've been neglecting the defence up to this point. In our 3-4 front Nose Tackle and maybe Inside Linebacker are about the only set positions so far. We could use an impact player anywhere else, but will be looking for a cover corner, (natch), a pass rushing Weak Outside Linebacker, A play diagnosis specialist Safety and a lunking great run stuffing defensive end. Now watch in awe as I pick a Wide Out and an under-achieving QB. It's the Detroit way.

You can't argue with tradition.
Unless you use statistics, obv.
I say you have to go for "The Guy". I'm not sure who "The Guy" is, but he seems to be very popular. I was listening to the Rich Eisen podcasts pre-draft and Brian Billick was on about "The Guy", as was Mike Mayock and apparently a lot of the teams were looking for him. Even the Patriots podcast was telling me they wanted "The Guy" at OLB, which confused me a little as I thought he was a QB going to Carolina or Arizona.
Can you shed some light on this please, Stu?

Further proof that the draft ratings are based purely on whether you pick players to cover holes in your team, not whether those players are any good, comes as I'm given an "A" for this lot :
1.23 Kamerion Wimbley - LB - 26/39 2.23 Freddie Keiaho - LB - 22/32 3.23 Cedric Griffin - CB - 16/27 4.23 Ko Simpson - FS - 15/32 5.23 Derrick Martin - CB - 12/17 6.23 Rodrique Wright - DE - 12/33 7.23 Patrick Cobbs - RB - 14/16
I mean, really. I couldn't have done worse if I'd had my cat pick.
Our new scout, (Good - Very Good - Good for DL/LB/DB) says my first four picks are all "very underrated" and they bloody well need to be.

|
Post by Mr Bismarck's Electric Donkey on May 20, 2011 18:08:15 GMT
That turned into :
1.23 Kamerion Wimbley - LB - 26/39 : 32/43 2.23 Freddie Keiaho - LB - 22/32 : 27/36 3.23 Cedric Griffin - CB - 16/27 : 19/24 4.23 Ko Simpson - FS - 15/32 : 19/38 5.23 Derrick Martin - CB - 12/17 : 14/21 6.23 Rodrique Wright - DE - 12/33 : 14/32 7.23 Patrick Cobbs - RB - 14/16 : 15/19
So everyone improved, which is nice, but they certainly had the room for it.
Fortunately, I had a decent Free Agency period.

Detroit Lions Roster, Scout Overview Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Harrington, Joey 19 QB QB 5 57 57 3 yrs Smith, Alex 4 QB 2 35 44 3 yrs Ragone, Dave 2 QB 4 24 43 1 yr.
No surprises here - Joey H is still the man in charge and will probably continue to be so until the Niners are forced to release either Leftwich or Roethlisberger. He's essentially a mid to deep-mid range guy with good accuracy and timing, (the complete opposite of the real Harrington), but he struggles reading defences and isn't going to make a career of leading last minute drives to victory. Smith is still developing and is decent at pretty much everything. I expect him to have a long NFL career bouncing between teams as a back up. Ragone is also a useful backup, but will probably be gone elsewhere at the end of the season. Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Jones, Kevin 45 RB 3 55 55 5 yrs Gore, Frank 34 RB RB 2 49 51 3 yrs Fargas, Justin 25 RB 4 34 34 1 yr. Cobbs, Patrick 31 RB 1 15 19 3 yrs Schlesinger, Cory 22 FB FB 12 29 29 3 yrs
The one-two punch of Jones and Gore worked reasonably well last year, although both were limited by some offensive line issues - we're still technique-based rather than muscle blockers up the middle. Jones got a thousand yards and promptly held out for more money at the start of this year. I flattened the contract offer and took $800,000 out of the bonus he asked for and he accepted. I expect I'll follow my FOF previous and trade Jones away in year 4 or 5 of the deal. Gore only got 50 carries last year which is probably underusing him a little, as he finished with 4.69 a carry. Fargas will probably be gone at the end of the year and Cobbs clearly is little more than a make weight who'll be cut the first time I need some roster space. Schlesinger is right at the end of a an illustrious career and if he has a good season his reward will be being cut at the end of it instead of in the middle. Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Gates, Antonio 81 TE TE 4 74 74 2 yrs Jolley, Doug 82 TE 5 49 49 1 yr. Fitzgerald, Larry 83 FL FL 3 74 74 2 yrs Drummond, Eddie 85 FL 5 34 34 3 yrs Jenkins, Michael 80 SE SE 3 47 47 1 yr. Crowell, Germane 89 SE 9 45 45 2 yrs
The receivers are going to continue to give matchup nightmares to the opposition and make our Quarterbacks look better than they are. Fitzgeraland and Gates are both now fully developed and pretty deadly - Gates less so because it's hard to get the game to target a Tight End, even if he's an All World Tight End. Crowell is on the downslope and Drummond is essentially a special-teamer, but Michael Jenkins has been an incredible surprise for a sixth round draft pick. He has 84 adjust to ball, 84 third down catching, 73 courage and 68 big play receiving. Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Raiola, Dominic 50 C C 6 61 61 2 yrs Brown, Jason 57 C 2 21 44 2 yrs Roberson, Pete 65 LG LG 5 63 63 3 yrs Flynn, Fred 75 LG 5 48 48 2 yrs Smith, Brent 62 LG 10 39 39 1 yr. Thomas, Randy 64 RG RG 8 54 54 1 yr. Brown, Milford 72 RG 4 52 52 1 yr. Backus, Jeff 76 LT LT 6 72 72 1 yr. Kaczur, Nick 61 RT RT 2 67 67 3 yrs McDougle, Stockar 69 RT 7 56 56 4 yrs Carey, Vernon 66 RT 3 48 48 1 yr.
Our line is finally rounding out with some road-graders now who'll bite people if necessary to get them out of the way. Raiola is really the only pure-finess blocker left and the starting right side pair of Thomas and Kaczur have 82 and 52 for blocking strength. McDougle has 92, but can't pass block at all, so gets a limited role. Carey came from the same draft as Michael Jenkins and is also a pleasant surprise - the fifth round Tackle is a very nice backup. On the left side Jeff Backus is in a contract year and will probably get Franchised next year, or else I'll have to pay him a billion dollars an hour. Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Lechler, Shane 8 P 7 66 66 5 yrs Hanson, Jason 11 K 15 58 58 3 yrs
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Kampman, Aaron 74 LDE 5 50 50 1 yr. Edwards, Kalima 79 LDE LDE 5 42 42 1 yr. Elliss, Luther 73 NT 12 42 42 2 yrs
The line is respectable, without a standout except for maybe Rogers at NT who's bullishly strong, but a fat fook who gets out of breath looking at a picture of cake. Kampman is a nice find on the left and we'll be platooning the right defensive end. Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Kriewaldt, Clint 56 SILB SILB 8 54 54 2 yrs Hillenmeyer, Hunter 58 SILB 4 35 35 1 yr. Faulk, Trev 96 WILB 5 47 47 1 yr. Wimbley, Kamerion 59 WLB 1 33 43 4 yrs Keiaho, Freddie 52 WLB 1 27 36 4 yrs
The Linebackers continue to be a sort of beige melange of averageness. No one here is going to be a standout, but no one is likely to let the side down if they're called upon. This despite the fact that I spent a first and second round draft pick on the position this year. :moop: Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Dyson, Andre 33 LCB LCB 6 62 62 5 yrs Newman, Terence 39 LCB 4 49 49 1 yr. Hobbs, Ellis 35 LCB 2 29 35 3 yrs Goodman, Andre 48 LCB 5 20 30 3 yrs Harper, Nick 21 RCB RCB 6 49 49 1 yr. Moreland, Earthwind 27 RCB 7 44 44 1 yr. Griffin, Cedric 38 RCB 1 20 24 3 yrs Martin, Derrick 32 RCB 1 14 21 3 yrs Scott, Bryan 47 SS SS 4 64 64 5 yrs Doering, Jason 37 FS FS 6 51 51 3 yrs Simpson, Ko 49 FS 1 20 38 4 yrs
Finding Andre Dyson and Bryan Scott in Free Agency was nice and the secondary has improved considerably, with the cohesion is beginning to round out too. They're still a bit of an odd group however, with a Safety in Jason Doering who's an excellent cover guy completely lacking the game-reading skills to play the deep centre field spot his position dictates and Newman and Harper at corner, both of whom are better at stopping the run than the pass. If injuries treat us nicely I expect to be good enough to reach the post season this year, but without All Pro-type players at either Quarterback or Runningback, I can't see us taking on the elite and troubling the Championships just yet.

Your roster looks way different to mine, I tend o go for 2 at each position, with a couple of extra WRs and then maybe a spare secondary/ d-lineman / o-lineman/ RB. Probably why I'm not doing as well as I had hoped.

That looks like an annoying season, always hanging around and just under .500. Turning 1-4 into 8-8 isn't too shabby though.
I don't want to pretend I'm Ron Jaworski or anything, but you might want to fire your Head Coach, even though he's led you to consecutive non-losing seasons. I mean you're dead last in the league in yards per carry, but you ran the ball the third highest number of times.
Meanwhile, you have the league's best completion percentage, 8th in yards per attempt, but you're 31st ranked in number of attempts and 31st in yards.

Very fair points, Stu. Unfortunately, I was a touch too eager last night and went through the staff hiring period before knocking the game off. So we'll have to wait another year befoer finding someone else. I'd probably take another 8-8 though
