Florida Atlantic 21 Louisiana Lafayette 26Florida Atlantic 7 7 0 7 - 21 Louisiana Lafayette 10 7 3 6 - 26 It's amazing how inured I am now to our completely anaemic offensive play. Our quarterbacks average fewer than 10 completions a game this season, but because they throw in a big play every now and then, we just about struggle through. In this game quarterback Mike Thornton completes three passes to our team and the same number to the opposition. He plays somewhat worse than a guy who can't move his neck. Fortunately, even though Peter Mims only completes 6 passes himself, two of them go for touchdowns of 57 and 75 yards . Donald Cannon who catches the second touchdown has a yards-per-catch this season of 41. Our best receiver, Chris Parks, is being made to look like a slow possession guy by only averaging 21 yards a catch. The Raging Cajuns shut us out last season, so this should please the board. We're still second in the Sun Belt standings too, which is way more than Alexander Davis expected when he sent me that slightly threatening letter at the start of the season. ScoringFirst Quarter FAU TD 13:30 7-0 Christopher Parks 57 YD Pass from Peter Mims (Calvin Taylor Kick). ULL FG 10:34 7-3 Craig Emery 37 YD ULL TD 03:02 10-7 Robert Oleary 15 YD Pass from Federico Boyer (Craig Emery Kick). Second Quarter ULL TD 12:06 17-7 Floyd Wright 14 YD Pass from Federico Boyer (Craig Emery Kick). FAU TD 04:22 17-14 Robert Yang 4 YD Run (Calvin Taylor Kick). Third Quarter ULL FG 05:48 20-14 Craig Emery 40 YD Fourth Quarter FAU TD 11:48 21-20 Donald Cannon 75 YD Pass from Peter Mims (Calvin Taylor Kick). ULL TD 04:56 26-21 Floyd Wright 10 YD Pass from Federico Boyer (2 Pts Failed) Game MVPTheir quarterback gets the MVP for completing 25 passes (about five games' worth for my quarterbacks) and three touchdowns (about three passes' worth for my quarterbacks). I give my award to Rob Yang as the halfback has his first game in a long time, hitting 82 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries and adding 29 yards on two catches.. Injuries![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Probable - QB - Randal Lange - Torn Foot Cartilage. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Probable - QB - Peter Mimms - Neck Strain. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Probable - WR - Jesse Nixon - Concussion. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Probable - OT - Marvin Murphy - Elbow Laceration. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Doubtful - LB - Kevin Naylor - Torn Elbow Tendon. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Doubtful - LB - Gordon Carter - Torn Patella Tendon. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Out - DT - Richard Figueroa - Serious Concussion. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Out - CB - Derek Archuleta - Fractured Scapula. ==== That'll mark the end of freshman Derek Archuleta's interesting season then. A broken foot, an infection in the break in his foot and then a fractured scapula. If he gets drafted in three years we'll be sending whichever team picks him a box with "some assembly required" stamped on the side and a picture of what the jigsaw's supposed to look like on the front. More annoying news comes like this : The following Florida Atlantic players are now eligible to return from their academic suspensions: C Steve Stout
The following Florida Atlantic players are now suspended: DE William Bowling ILB Kevin Naylor OG Chung Bennett Thankfully Naylor is injured, so he's free to be an idiot, but losing Chung Bennett is a blow. The freshman has been one of the least awful of our offensive line. Getting crap Center Steve Stout back is little consolation.

There's some nice wins in that mix when Coffers isn't posting. The others are ok, but not wins. It was almost to the stages of leafy branch there for Coffers.
How are the invitations to cringe watch going this season?

Florida Atlantic 20 Troy 13Florida Atlantic 3 7 10 0 - 20 Troy 10 0 3 0 - 13 Now, let's see if the people at home can guess how we won this one? Yes! You're right! Our quarterbacks go 13/28 between them but when they do complete a pass, it ends up looking like this : Chris Parks : 4 receptions, 134 yards, 33.5 ypc. Don Cannon : 4 receptions, 132 yards, 33 ypc. Amusingly, Cannon has two "yards after catch" meaning we really are hurling it out there. There's no dink and dunk turned into big gains here. Anyway, with Thornton injured and Mims still moaning about his bloody neck, it's Randal "Useless" Lange who benefits, going 8 of 16 for 214 yards. One of the long grabs is turned into a short three yard scoring pass to Irving Jones, (who lets the receiving corps down by only averaging 11 ypc), and another is converted when Rob Yang runs in from 12 yards out. It's a shame that BBCF doesn't show you drive information like TCY does, because I imagine our average drive lasts seven plays and gains about four yards and then every now and then, we complete a 50 yard pass and score. Still, whatever keeps the board from firing me, eh? Elsewhere in the offence, the switch from "normal" to "outside run" offensive gameplans gives freshman halfback Blake Ray his best career day as he finished with 63 yards on 15 carries. With our offensive line falling apart through injury and suspension running up the middle just isn't going to work. The pair of Guards who replaced the suspended Chung Bennett allowed two sacks this week and were called for two false starts and three holding penalties... ![](http://www.geocities.com/jacquesdebohun/smilies/moop.gif) Poor old Rob Yang is seeing his figures destroyed by the mockery of blocking we have, as his yards per carry has dipped .7 to 2.5 and his yards per game are down a full ten to 52.5 a game. In two games this year he's failed to average one yard per carry. ScoringFirst Quarter TROY FG 11:12 3-0 Lawrence Tracy 52 YD FAU FG 05:44 3-3 Calvin Taylor 26 YD TROY TD 01:40 10-3 Stephen King 1 YD Pass from Rodney Mcneil (Lawrence Tracy Kick). Second Quarter FAU TD 03:58 10-10 Irvin Jones 3 YD Pass from Randall Lange (Calvin Taylor Kick). Third Quarter FAU TD 10:51 17-10 Robert Yang 12 YD Run (Calvin Taylor Kick). FAU FG 04:42 20-10 Calvin Taylor 30 YD TROY FG 00:25 20-13 Lawrence Tracy 40 YD Game MVPChris Parks gets the Dusty Bin mvp award this week, for his 134 yards on just four catches. I might give my award to Troy Guard Roger Christian, who was flagged for holding an impressive four times. Those christians eh? Always after a cuddle. Injuries![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Probable - QB - Peter Mimms - Neck Strain. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Probable - CB - Derek Archuleta - Fractured Scapula. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Probable - WR - Jesse Nixon - Concussion. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Probable - OT - Marvin Murphy - Elbow Laceration. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Questionable - TE - Ronald Burgess - Knee Inflammation. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Doubtful - LB - Kevin Naylor - Torn Elbow Tendon. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Doubtful - LB - Gordon Carter - Torn Patella Tendon. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Doubtful - QB - Mike Thornton - Shoulder Subluxation. ![](http://www.theage.com.au/images/icon/icon_injury.gif) Out - DT - Richard Figueroa - Serious Concussion. ==== After mocking him as fragile, Derek Archuleta goes from "out" to "probable" inside of two weeks, with a fractured scapula. Florida Atlantic 3 Washington State 29Florida Atlantic 0 0 3 0 - 3 Washington State 7 10 3 9 - 29 What happens when the unstoppable (24th ranked) force hits the very moveable object? The Cougars rack up 36 minutes of possession and 510 yards of offence in cruising past us in a most unconcerned fashion, barely noticing that we're there. Quarterback Peter Mims completes a whopping three passes, (although they are, predictably, for 54, 46 and, err, 3 yards), Randal Lange goes 6 of 17 with an interception and Mike Thornton wanders in off the bench to get sacks in the end zone for a safety. This week, the clowns at Guard don't get called for holding which is good. But they allow five sacks. Which isn't. I can see now why schools are accused of fudging the grades of their football players. ScoringFirst Quarter WAST TD 08:55 7-0 Calvin Gee 19 YD Pass from Johnny Wilson (John Cline Kick). Second Quarter WAST TD 09:26 14-0 Gregory Peters 2 YD Run (John Cline Kick). WAST TD 05:19 29-3 Gregory Peters 1 YD Run (John Cline Kick). Game MVPTheir halfback Greg Peters gets the MVP for 128 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries and 92 receiving yards on four catches. Poof. I give my award to Jay Nelson, again, for 8 tackles, 4 assists, a stuff, a fumble forced, a fumble recovery and a pass defenced. Sure we've won more than expected, but it's been a horribly mish mash of rubbish players at quarterback and cornerback and the ultimate one-trick pony style offence of the late 80s Oakland Raiders of throw it long and see who catches it. We have many ways to lose, but only one way to win. Plus, I'm keen to get to recruiting, in the hope that we'll land someone who's at least vaguely talented. Though I'm not hopeful after last year when our best recruit was someone who begged to come to the school and was still ranked well outside the top 1000 players.

Florida Atlantic 13 Florida International 24Florida Atlantic 3 3 7 0 - 13 Florida International 7 14 3 0 - 24 Last year the board wanted us to beat FAU and we did. This year, they asked for the same and... that didn't work out. The last game of the season and I'm very glad, even though recruiting doesn't look like it's going to bring much in the way of improvement for us. Our quarterbacks are dreadful again; Peter Mims completing just 11 of 35 passes for 187 yards and the only touchdown of the day, while the Golden Panthers cruise to a 21-6 halftime lead and then just nod off in the second half, safe in the knowledge that we're not coming back. Gah.

![](http://i31.tinypic.com/mmznk0.jpg) For the second year running we finish 6-6, although the results were a bit more rounded this year, compared to last season when we won our opening four games, then fell apart. It's fair to say that the team is still aimless. Without direction. The quarterback play is all over the place which is part the fault of the guys playing the position and part the fault of the shoddy receivers and completely useless offensive line. The line has to be a focus in recruiting this year, because the level of play is just bush league. I try to build up the line play whenever I take over a helmetball team because nothing on the offence works without blocking and the performance of Yang, Mims et al, average as they are, is being butchered by the clowns up front. On defence we'd actually developed some better play by the end of the season, thanks to defensive ends John Johnson, James Miller and Paul Diaz, who helped keep the defence off of our set of young linebackers who all turned in performances above expectation. The pass rush had the usual effect ont he secondary too. While the guys up front didn't get a lot of sacks, the pressure they put on helped protect our secondary, who were nothing more than average even before the injuries kicked in, but appeared much better as a result. For recruiting we're in the usual position of being able to sign anyone, because no one is a set four year starter on the Owls yet, but if there's one position where we could probably get away with not signing anyone then it's across the linebacker slots. However, if someone's there to be taken and wants to sign, we'll have them. We can't afford to be picky.

RecruitingYou can do your own jokes. Coach Bismarck,
My dad played football for Florida Atlantic many years back and loved the school. I now live in Michigan, but still visit with my dad at least once a year. Although FAU is not my first choice I would like to visit Florida Atlantic and meet with you and the team.
I am currently playing Outside Linebacker and think I could really help out your team next season. I know you have a limited number of scholarships, but my dad was a staple at Florida Atlantic a few years back and I'd like to continue the family name there. So, I hope you will consider me in your recruiting.
Sincerely,
Gaylord Gonzalez FAU. Not Gaylord's first choice.

Recruiting. Last year I didn't really know what I was doing when it came to recruiting and made a mistake in not scouting my second choices until after my first choices had gone elsewhere, meaning I didn't know what pitch was important for players and ended up offering playing time to people looking for location, location for people who were looking for a certain style of play and so on. So this year I decided to go heavy on the scouting in the first week and wait until my staff reported back to me on what the player was looking for before putting in any bids. Any spare money from each week would then go on scouting second-level recruits, in case for when my first choices turn me down. Early on this seemed to be working well when we snapped up Gaylord Gonzalez in just the third week of recruiting. Last year's emailer Russell Kelley didn't join for about six weeks and his initial interest was a "10", whereas Gonazalez's is only an "8." But then the weeks tick on and on and our commited player list stands at... one. Going into the final week of recruiting Gonzalez is still our only recruit and it's looking like we're going to have not just a horrible result, but an embarrassing one. Thankfully, in the final seven days the phone rings off the hook and we end up with a total of eight recruits, including three three star players, two of whom are rated inside the top 1000 - the first time FAU have managed that. An incredible relief. I didn't realise the game did that, so even though I'll only have the pair for two years, that's still pretty cool. It's only rated the 111th best recruiting class, (because we only got eight players), which is actually one place lower than last year, but last year we didn't get any three star players. After taking too long to scout last year, this year's recruiting mistake was aiming too high and spending too much time with recruits ranked around 500. I'm just not in a position to bid for those guys, (Erik Ewing is our highest rated recruit ever, at 734), which meant that I missed out on some two star players rated around 1200 that would have signed, but escaped to Rice and, even worse, the two Louisiana teams I play against, because they gave up on waiting for me. Still, I claim more-owl victory, because Felix Bonk is a great name.

FAU 2008 Roster - Offence. (Brackets around year indicate player has previously been redshirted)
Quarterback #20 Peter Mims (SO) Mims is the man right now, which gives an indication of how badly we're in need of talent at the most important position on the field, as Mims completed only 44% of his passes last season.
Good accuracy, but that isn't reflected in the stats as he struggles to make good reads, plays behind a bad offensive line and is throwing to one-trick receivers.
#6 Robert Barton (FR) Barton is allegedly the man of the future for us at Quarterback. Currently third on the depth chart, the redshirt freshman didn't improve too much in his season of watching and has even more of a pop-gun arm than Mims, if you can conceive such a thing.
Runningback #29 Robert Yang (JR) Yang looked solid in 2006, but was neutered in 07 by the terrible line play in front of him and defences that keyed on the back to force our poor quarterbacks to beat them.
He's one of the best run blockers on the team, so it's a shame he can't block for himself.
#37 Blake Ray SO Much like the quarterback position, the man of the future at halfback is deemed so through lack of competition. Looked like a good outside runner in high school, but nothing of the sort for us.
Fullback #23 Kenneth Peters FR Our new recruit goes straight into the starting lineup from day one. Needs to bulk up, (the coaches want him to gain eight pounds in the weight room), and his run blocking should go from good to very good if he pulls that off.
As a freshman start, Peters gets to be the now man and the future man combined.
Wide Receiver #81 Christopher Parks (SR) Parks caught 25 fewer passes in 07 than the previous year with Irving Flores playing quarterback, but took those passes for 54 more yards thanks to our "bombs away" style.
Parks actually has pedestrian physical skills, but he runs good routes which gets him open in zones for big gains.
Disturbingly most of the receiving corps is graduating in the next two seasons, which means we've no man of the future here.
Tight End #82 Ronald Burgess (SO) Number one on the team primarily through his work ethic, which sees him making the most of his limited talent. Needs to spend more time on his stamina though. He should really catch more passes than the 10 he managed last year, but he's often kept in to block because our line is so bad.
Burgess is our youngest Tight End, eligibility wise, so this is another position with no bursting young talent waiting for a chance.
Offensive Line #75 Erik Ewing FR Our highest-ranked recruit ever, so it's no surprise to see Ewing on the field from day one. Hopefully he'll raise the play of the line from the inside out, as Guard was a real problem for us last season.
Gets into his stance too slowly, but that will worry a Center less than other line positions and once he is set he's our best blocker. Intelligent too, which will help for the "captain of the line" position.
#78 Chung Bennett SO Bennett is our sole hope for the future on the line, (outside of Ewing himself), with decent physical skills, held back by a lack of aggressiveness. He also struggles with the school side of things and it would be no surprise to see him suspended again this season.

FAU 2008 Roster - Offence. (Brackets around year indicate player has previously been redshirted)
Defensive End #97 Felix Bonk FR Our new and shiny defensive end is clearly the best player across the front seven and not just because he's called "Bonk."
Speed is lacking, but he does have excellent acceleration which will hopefully translate into a first step that beats a lot of Offensive Tackles at this level.
#93 Hector Morales JR (Community College Transfer) Even though Bonk is actually the guy and the man to watch, Morales deserves a mention as he's almost as good as the Johnson/Miller partnership he replaced.
A jack of all trades, he will hopefully improve into a very solid player next year in what will, sadly, be his second and final season at the school.
Defensive Tackle #99 Richard Figueroa (SO) Figueroa returns from a severe concussion that ended a promising 2007 season for him prematurely. He's a solid tackle with the stamina to play all day, which is why it was such a blow to lose him last season. We play the 3-4 base, so the NT is a key position for us.
Linebacker #52 Kevin Naylor (SO) Naylor was injured for most of last season, which was less of a loss than you'd expect, because he was also academically suspended. If he can keep out of detention for us this year he should make a decent fist at taking over for the graduated Jay Nelson.
#45 Russell Kelley SO Even though newboy Gaylord Gonzalez gets strong consideration here and will probably end up being a better player, the man to watch her is last year's letter-writing sychophant Kelley. Brutishly strong for an outside backer Kelley accelerates well and makes good tackles. With a bit more speed his hits would routinely cause fumbles because this guy can break rocks.
Cornerback #34 Larry Smith (SR) Smith has started all 25 games since I took over and is a solid cover corner with good agility and acceleration, although he doesn't have the speed to cover the better receivers. He'd make an excellent nickle corner, but I'd need two players better than Smith instead of the roughly none players I have now.
#24 Derek Archuleta SO Richard Walsh may end up starting at the second corner slot this season after playing well in spot duty in 2007, but Archuleta is the future of corner at FAU. As a freshman he appeared to be a contradiction - seeming fragility (three injuries) mixed with iron man ability (recovering from a fracture scapula in two weeks, anyone?).
Safety #30 Daniel Santana SO Like Archuleta, Santana went straight into the lineup last season in his freshman year. Unlike Archuleta, Santana lasted the year and started every game. His 63 tackles (50 solo) and two interceptions were a decent return for a youngster, but he'll be expected to step it up a bit this season.
#39 Sidney Moore JR (Community College Transfer) Moore is a 22 year old in his first year on campus after spending two seasons at his local community college. Good in coverage, with good instincts Moore could turn out to be very solid, or he could be limited by his below average speed.

2008 Schedule WEEK OPPONENT 1 Bowling Green 2 OPEN 3 UTEP 4 at Troy 5 Temple 6 North Texas 7 at Louisiana-Monroe 8 at #15 Missouri 9 Louisiana-Laf 10 OPEN 11 at Arkansas State 12 Middle Tenn St 13 OPEN 14 Florida Int 15 OPEN
I decided to commit employment suicide challenge myself this year by booking a trip to Missouri to play the #15 ranked team in the country.
They'll be FAU's first ever top-25 ranked opponents, or will be if they're still there come week eight.
Week three features a visit of Coffers' bunch from TCY and the last game of the season is clearly "rivalry week" because it's always Florida International.
I'm projected to finish 7th in the Sun Belt this year, but last season we were projected 8th and were in second until the final week. So glory here we come.

Nice work, s1ut. TBH, I wish I'd chosen to pay money for a football game instead of Hoops. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I kinda have an idea WTF is going on in that. But only just.

Based on how miserable Stu's fortune is in this game, I have downloaded the demo. :humb:
On which note, is it worth it Stu; really?

I took the plunge and bought this (for lack of anything better to do this afternoon). Tried a quick game as Indiana, after a 3-0 start it collapsed to a 3-8 and I have no idea why (apart from maybe the fact I had 3 QB's all eminently overqualified to work at Burger King, but no relevant qualifications for tossing a pigskin). Had a fiddle, tried a few changes and stuff, then packed it in. Started the game off afresh, put in all the "real" college names and divisions etc (must be a permanent way of doing this Stu Shirley?) and kicked off as Penn State Nittany Lions. Great QB, above average depth throughout the offense (if lacking in star men) an a defence only fractionally better than Indiana...but, and here's the thing, I have an idea what to do with formations now and so we're at 5-0 and top of the Big Ten conference. Red Shirted practically anything under the age of 20 whether they liked it or not, but my starting coaches are bollocks so development for them is going to be nil to negligible.
The offensive coach is quite good mind you, but defensive one is atrocious (the veritable mirror image of my Indiana game in effect).
Barring the 62-3 blowout of Arkansas I've won every game by less than a TD. Hoo-ha.
I rate this game :moose:
