Of course, the stuff on the HDD isn't lost. When all this proves futile and you buy a new PC, you can plug your old HDD into the new PC as a secondary drive, and you'll have all your music'n'shit.

Far too positive thinking.

Failing that, you can always take it to a place that specialises in recovering data from broken HDs. Or do what Boo said.
Why is it too positive DC?

Boony was actually audacious enough to suggest the hard drive isn't wiped.
That's like saying "The network will be right back up, after we reboot the system".
And we all know where that got them in Jurssic Park - eated, that's where.

Though funny enough, all it takes for the network to be back up where I work is a phone call saying that none of the computers can see the server, and I think it's the gateway computer that needs rebooting ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Yes, I know. It's not the same thing. You've lost me though. Isn't wiped? Why would it be. Or is that the point and I missed it?

Never be hopeful, lest you dare the gremlins to perform dastardly acts with the components that are hopefully not broken.

Sorry to keep asking questions about all this.
So I've located a replacement motherboard (same model means compatibility guaranteed, yes?) for £30. How tricky is it to transfer the processor etc across?

Processer can be a bit of a cock because the clips they use to mount the fans can be a cocksucker to get off. But once you get the motherboard out of the box you can usually get at the clips with a lever and pop one side up.
Everything else is about as tricky as Lego, although it depends on the size of your case - mine's full tower so it's a dream to work in, loads of space.

Bostord ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I guess it's not that hard to take out and put in, it's just as elth said, if yours are still using the idiotic clip on thing, it'll probably take you aeons to get it out.

The other PC we have in the house has a 250W output as opposed to this one's 450, so I guess it would be a bit daft to try that.
But how about trying the 450 on the other PC- would that give an idea whether it was working or not?
Gah.

Yeah, do it when the kids are out of earshot. And have some bandaids handy.
I would give the 400W a spin in the other PC, sure.

Okay, I'm back again... I disconnected all the power supplies and took the fan off and the processor out. It sits in a kind of cage, with a complex bar-system to keep it in place. Anyway, reconnecting it all up only produced one result- the cd drive now no longer works. Doesn't light up, open or anything. I tried a couple of the other power leads on the PSU and nothing. Would this suggest the PSU is buggered? Anyway, I am now looking on ebuyer- is this what I need: www.ebuyer.com/product/120674 ? How can I tell if it has the long rectangular cable that goes into the mobo? And if I do get a replacement mobo, do I need some of the pastey stuff? I've not tried the PSU in the other pc- all too hassley at the moment.

Another question, sorry.
Looking at a new dvd drive- if they have a ribbon cable, is that a sure sign it's IDE? The hdd in the pc is ATA and has a very different connector, while the dvd drive has that ribbon cable and the standard four-pin power slot.

Odd for the DVD drive not to fire up.
You generally have 2 or 3 rails in the PSU supplying various V to support certain peripherals. Depending what might or might not have gone pop...meh, it's a beggar to work out.
IDE = yes. You can get an adaptor though I believe (never seen one though).

So if I order that new PSU, a motherboard of the same spec, then something should sort it out, yes?
Paste?

Post by Mr Bismarck's Electric Donkey on Sept 28, 2008 18:38:27 GMT
It doesn't hurt to have the CPU paste and it's cheap so if you're ordering you may as well throw some in.

Replied to wrong topic. Whoops. But yeah - PSU looks fine, never had Sumvision before, but differences are generally minor between brands.
