I'd imagine that the best motherboard out there would still be able to take all things that will be added to it.

Modular means you can plug as many of the supplied cables as you need into it, rather than having one big tangle of cables sticking out the back taking up space, whilst only needing a few.

And yeah, more power = you can put in bigger video cards that need more supply.
I hate to think what I have in my current system, some form of thermonuclear reactor.

Oh well, order placed. The motherboard is not the same model as mine, but it's close. That should be okay. I'll try the PSU first, though.
Gah, frankly. Gah x 4.
Computers are rubbish.

I'm with you on this one Pops.
In an amusing interchange between myself and the wifely one last night, she remarked how "it must be time for a new version of that shite you play", to which I replied, "What? The flute?". Chastisement ensued with "no, moron, Football Manager." "Ah!", replied I, "but I can't get it, what with my PC being older than God's grandma and not having a DVD player in it."
"Why don't you get a new one then?"
I harumphed in her general direction, as I'd been saying this for yonks. She'll shit herself when HAL's big brother arrives when I order the fooker.

At least she's been well trained enough to know when it's that time of year... I've been telling myself I need a new PC for about the last three years, but I still haven't found the money for one. They're getting cheaper and cheaper, though. Maybe this winter will be the winter...

Bet Boony ate it.
I'd get a New Computer™ once I have the money. AMD AM2 5000+, 2-4GB, GeForce9600, some decent mobo and a 500w power supply and we are good to go.
Will set me back around £200, maybe 300 if I want a new monitor.

Seems so Elth. A guy at my work spent about $5k on his laptop, only to have to pay a import duty(or whatever it is called) after finding out that customs was holding. Nice of them to tell him that they were doing this though The guys in the post office needed new pants though.

I harumphed in her general direction, as I'd been saying this for yonks. She'll shit herself when HAL's big brother arrives when I order the fooker. I've cunningly allowed Mrs Nark to convince me that we need a computer. Our one is so old that it throws a fit every time she tries to edit any photos. So not only shall we be getting a new computer (at last) but it saves my spending money for comics and stuff.

If I'm honest, I'd have though you could get something pretty similar for cheaper through Dell, but I'm not 100% on some of the gubbins in there. You would think so, but no. The lowest spec Dell XPS M1530 is £805, and only has the 256MB 8600M GT video system. Although it does feature a Core 2 Duo instead of the slower AMD chip, and a slightly larger hard disk, it's otherwise a bit more expensive for a similar, if not slightly slower PC. Dell aren't actually very good value for laptops. I'd have got a HP if I wanted a big brand notebook - they have the exact same specs as the MSI, but with half the RAM, but a Core 2 Duo. So that's alright, except that the RAM's rubbish. And it's 2GB dual channel too, so I'd have to have paid up for a whole new 2GB chip just to get the 3GB.

My mum bought her "middle of the road" laptop off them for just over £300, but obviously doesn't have half the stuff in it you did - so a bit surprising how much of a mark-up it is after that point.

The bits arrived yesterday. I finally plucked up the courage to start putting them in today.
Went for the PSU first. Nice piece of kit. Lots of cool black "netted" wiring. Plug what bits you want in, etc. So, plugged all the bits in. Deep breath. Switched on.... nada.
Not so much as a "pheet".
So. Recheck. The mobo light isn't on, so a basic problem here. Reverse the mobo power cables.
Switch on... It's Alive!
Has reset a lot of the profile stuff (Favourites etc), but all is intact and happy. Hdd is as stuffed full as ever.
The fan on the side of the unit was making a hell of a racket, though- I thought the extra power must be running it on overdrive. So I opened the box to disconnect it. Then tried it again and it was fine- one of the cables was hitting the fans blades. Now all quiet.
Huzzah!
And a spare mobo into the deal.
Thanks All for the advice, help and support. Big cheers and :humb:s

Keep a hold of that MoBo, somewhere secret, somewhere safe. As long as you have it, the current MoBo will never break. Good to have you back online sir. Good to see DC was right all along, just like I thought.

:humb: Still very odd, normally you'd hear the crack of a PSU across the room or get a tell tale whiff of burning metal and plastic. I honestly can't remember the time a PSU burnt out enough rails to power up, but not actually start any processes. Usually it either works (but something else doesn't), or doesn't work (and you're staring at a silent system).
