Buffalo Bills.
Shite.
2010... we finished 5-11 with a very poor squad (in other thread). I'll be posting the new roster in here once it's sorted but I have a lot of cap room available so I hope to get a couple of high profile signings to help the errr.... whole team. I pick 5th in the 1st round then 7th/6th/5th etc. Should be a challenge.

2002 with Detroit went at least twice as good as the real thing as we won our last home game of the season, vaulting over Chicago into an impressive second place in the NFC North with a not-at-all-impressive 6-10 final record. Of course this is actually bad as it means we don't have a high draft choice but, on the other hand, at least we won't have to take Charles Rogers now. Week Team Versus Oppnt 1 10 at CHI 17 2 17 PHI 45 3 26 at MIN 14 4 9 at GBY 24 5 7 STL 45 6 9 at NYK 17 8 29 WAS 17 9 6 NYK 17 10 9 at BUF 34 11 24 at DAL 16 12 13 NED 37 13 36 CHI 14 14 6 GBY 42 15 25 at TBY 13 16 16 at MIA 27 17 14 MIN 7 Winning six games out of sixteen without a single two-game win streak is some achievement. Offensively we were 20th rushing and 29th passing, for 30th in total yards and 28th in points scored. Defensively we were 25th against the rush, 27th against the pass, 29th in total yardage and a super-duper 26th for points allowed. In a 32-team league these are not good numbers. Statistically the team was probably worse than you'd expect for a 6-10 finish. Joey Harrington got some time late in the season and showed glimpses of his potential by throwing six interceptions to finish with a 41.8 passer rating. Charlie Batch was the "best" passer with a rating of 68, including 8 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. Admittedly neither were helped by injuries to the offensive line and a season on IR from the team's best receiver Bill Schroeder, but recovery of those two pieces of the offence isn't suddenly going to transform Harrington into Manning. One bright spot for us was the play of Haflback Richard Huntley. 2002 was real life Huntley's last in the NFL and may well be the last with my Lions, but he went out with 1,135 yards at five yards a pop with nine touchdowns. Behind him James Stewart hit 5.59 yards a carry, but with only one football to go around he only got the ball 54 times. I aim him to be featured a lot more in 2003. Huntley also added 75 catches, tied for most on the team with speedy stone-handed Az Zahir Hakim. Germaine Crowell had the most yards with 754 on 67 catches and added six touchdowns - three times as many as anyone else. Right Defensive End James Hall was a terror to opposing Quarterbacks with a team-leading seven sacks and eighteen hurries. Veteran Quarterback Todd Lyght grabbed a team-best five interceptions. Normally in FOF I don't allow myself to re-sign more than one player mid-season to force me to bid for my own players against the AI, driving up my own cap costs and removing a major advantage humans have over the AI, but for this season along I'm trying to sign anyone with a year remaining who is half-decent. This should include both Halfbacks, but Huntley wants entirely too much money and James Stewart - that's 100 loyalty James Stewart - isn't interested in resigning. I did get WR Crowell to re-up along with Corner Todd Lyght, but almost everyone else is mostly interested in getting the hell out of Detroit, so I'm going to be earning some frequent shopper points in Free Agency.

Yeah, it's not the way to endear yourself to me, it has to be said. I need all sorts of help and as I'm drafting #2, you'd think that I'd be able to nab something pretty special. Well, the Tackle who is adjusted #1 is a RT and I already have one of those and the QB who is #2 isn't really anything special. I do need a QB and an LT, but the guy who I really think is the best pick is a Safety and he's around #15. I'[m not really looking forward to the next session I have on this.

Drafting out of real players is... interesting. Byron Leftwich is there and rated higher than Carson Palmer and Seneca Wallace is rated higher than both... I don't know if this is just my scout is crap, or if the x-factor has really rearranged them to this degree.
So now I'm frightened.

Post by Moo on Apr 23, 2011 22:39:08 GMT
So will all the future drafts have the original draftees? So, for instance JaMarcus Russell will be in his draft? I hope he's really really good. That would fuck you up proper.

Post by Mr Bismarck's Electric Donkey on Apr 24, 2011 15:18:26 GMT
Russell will be there at the appropriate time, yes. I just have to hope I'm good enough by then that I don't get a chance to pick him.
I'll probably be taking Carson Palmer if he's still on the board at #10 this year. I've suffered too often at his hands in previous games. Of course, both the Vikes and the Bears pick before me, so I might get to enjoy Carson twice a year yet.
Although the Bears should probably pick that nice Mr Grossman...

Yes I signed Doug Flutie. I figured with his leadership he can hold the reins for a season and hopefully help to develop Joey Harrington beyond the useless waste of crabon he turns into in real life. I even sent Harrington to the summer league and he came back, (18/49), worse than he left, (20/50). Richard Huntley drew interest from essentially no one and so finally re-signed, which was the same story with LB Chris Claiborne. With new addition Dwayne Rudd in the middle I'm a step closer to the desired switch to a 3-4 defence. The Secondary is still a mess and almost everyone is on one year deals, so it's already shaping up to be the pain in the arse it has been in every other FOF game I've played. On offence I was happy to pick up a good Split End in Jonny Morton and some solid Guards, but at Tackle we're still talented with no depth at all. Overall it's not horrible and I can pretty much just draft whoever appears to be the best player, as we have some holes, but no position is suffering from lawn-chairitis. Here's hoping Carson Palmer drops to #10.

The expansion Houston Texans are picking first after a season in which the game echoed real life and their Offensive Line got David Carr killed - Carr suffered a career-ending concussion in week four of 2002. So Houston are in the market for a QB again and they take Seneca Wallace #1 overall.
(Remember the game's "x" factor means this might be the right choice, even though Carson Palmer is out there. And Rex Grossman.)
Picking #2 San Francisco took "Lord" Byron Leftwich as a future replacement for Jeff Garcia and then the Vikings took Carson Palmer. :moop:
As predicted, I'll be facing Carson Palmer twice a year. Forever.
FUCK.

I knew you would. There's still some decent talent out there for round one... Andre Johnson was drafted in 2003, as was Terrell Suggs, Troy Polamalu, Nnamdi Asomugha and my scouts have special moments every time I ask them to look at Willis McGahee. Unbelievably, of all first rounders in 2003 Charles Rogers and his 36 career catches was possibly not the worst - Philadelphia picked a Defensive End called Jerome McDougle who picked up 30 tackles and three sacks before running out of people to give him money. Up next, the Jets, Giants, Saints, Seahawks, Bears, Cowboys and then my Lions. Here's hoping Rex Grossman is still there!

The Jets took Defensive Tackle Kevin Williams, who was the highest-rated player in the draft and then the Giants, picking #5 overall went for Sexy Rex Grossman. :humb:
The Saints picked up Nick Barnett to play middle backer for them before Seattle took James Bradie at the same position.
Disappointed that they'd missed out on an ineffectual Quarterback in Grossman, the Bears took an ineffectual Halfback in Onterrio Smith, before the Cowboys, picking one spot in front of me, broke all of my scouts' hearts by picking Willis McGahee.
Currently, the highest-rated non-kicker available is some Tight End called... Antonio Gates.
Probably rubbish.

He has a silly name.
But you had full x-factor on right? So that means they're all random anyway? Or do they have a sort of boundary they fall into? For instance, in reality say Gates is 85 for avoid drops, but the x-factor boundary type thingie gives him a randomness of 75-95.
Or am I on the wrong track?

When my finances recover a little I may invest in FOF 2007. I quite enjoyed the College years one and I reckon I'd probably enjoy the draft part of FOF 2007 more than the game play part.

It's how I'm playing it Coffers. I hire the staff, set ticket prices, recruit free agents, select in the draft, sort out contracts. I have nothing to do with the game planning or the depth charts, although I do activate/deactivate injured players.

I actually have no idea. The draft files are created by someone who, I presume, gives the draftees abilities based on their real world performance and then the game skews that based on some (weighted?) randoms. However, I've no idea how far away from "normal" that can get. Gates wasn't drafted at all in real life, but I don't think the game is capable of modelling that sort of thing. In the game he has very high scouting bars in all the placed you'd expect - getting downfield, catching, avoiding drops, route running, but then on top of that my lead scout says he's "very overrated." So I don't know. I'm thinking of taking a Nose Tackle, Jimmy Kennedy, who's listed as underrated with scouted bars into the 80s for run stuffing and punishing hitting. I'm fairly solid at DT, but Horn told me to always pick the best player.

Don't worry, I drafted Dave Ragone instead.
Although I can't stop referring to him as Dave Rag One.

The game didn't like my draft, giving me the fourth-lowest score and a "C" rating - I guess even when you need everything, picking a Tight End in the first round isn't smiled upon. If people pan out to their potential ratings then I don't think it was terrible.
Antonio Gates - TE : 48/68 Terence Newman - CB : 25/40 Dave Ragone - QB : 10/71 Justin Fargas - RB : 20/25 Steve Sciullo - G : 14/25 Quentin Mikell - S : 10/29 Hunter Hillenmayer - LB : 15/35
Rag One is clearly a potnetial diamond in the (very) rough, but with Flutie on the team acting as a mentor I hope he'll come through for me in a couple years. I'm prepared to wait for a QB if I've found a good one in my first draft, considering how long it took me in my Raiders game.
Terence Newman is more of a run stuffer than a cover corner, but should be ok as he shouldn't need to start this year and Fargas, (Huggy Bear's cousin in real life), is an outside-the-tackles burner. Hillenmayer is possibly a bit better than you'd expect out of the seventh round, but his ability is almost all in his "special teams" bar. Which is fine.
First overall pick Seneca Wallace is showing as 42/77 and Carson Palmer is showing as a 13/45, so fuck that guy.
Namdi Asamaouaouaaouaagh is a 35/68. My scout said he was overrated. :cab:
