Not pass interference. The core of the rule is pass interference is called when you are trying to catch the pass. Gronk never even got close to turning in time, with or without Keuchly.
Holding would be a valid call. Can they change the reasons for applying a flag if it isn't the one the flag was thrown for? I seem to recall that in the NFL a flag is thrown and can only be judged on the grounds for the original toss. So you can't throw a flag for one infraction, and then penalise on another. Something like that anyway.

Holding can't be the call because the ball was in the air when the contact happened.
It's either PI or it's nothing. Kuechly doesn't turn his head, which is one of the key factors between calling or not calling incidental contact as interference, but the Ref decided to determine the ball was uncatchable, so GGWP.
I'm still solidly in the "what did the refs call? Eh. Fine" camp.

Apparently it can be holding when the ball is in the air. It's illegal contact that can't be called once the ball's been thrown. Apparently they're not the same thing. I don't know what the difference is...

Which is weird, because the Vice President of NFL officiating is on my TV telling people it can't be defensive holding or illegal contact once the ball is out of Brady's hand.

That is a bit odd...so you can hold all you like while the ball is in the air so long as the guy you're holding isn't the one trying to catch it?

Yes - you can hold away from the ball while the ball is in the air - because the pass is uncatchable to the person you're holding. If it gets intercepted, then you can be called for offensive holding, but that just takes yards off any return.

It's a silly game anyway.
The brutal simplicity of puckface wins, or would do if they could play a full season every now and then.

They will do this season, DC.
You'll be pleased to knowthat I'm really trying to get into puckface, listen to a couple of podcasts every week, that sort of thing. And I love the NHL app for my phone. Annoyed the Bruins lost last night

The US doesn't really care about puckface, outside of Boston, Chicago and Newark New Jersey. Especially since the league took their broadcast deal away to the Home Living Network, or something. At that point ESPN got in a strop and basically stopped covering the sport out of a fit of pique and if ESPN doesn't talk about it, the average sports fan forget it exists.
On the holding rule, it's silly, yes, but the ball's in the air for one to three seconds - if you really want to hug a wide receiver so badly that you need to hold while a pass is flying to someone else you could probably just ask.
If you don't ask, Steve Smith will rip your helmet off and beat you with it. Which was probably my favourite part of the football week.
At work I've taken over some of someone else's job, because they left and we're not allowed to replace them until 1/1/14. I'm already working Sunday-to-Friday every week and was moaning that this probably means I'll have to add Saturdays too and one of the other guys shouted "ice up son!"

Steve Smith evokes the same feelings in me that Dean Ambrose does in the WWE. He's so good at being a dickhead my annoyance has kind of crept into grudging admiration.
Steve Smith: Midcard Heel.

Annoyed the Bruins lost last night The league and players collectively fucked me off a few years ago. I now watch it for individual games. I like recent rule changes (although think goalies should still be able to play sweeper - they should just be made live meat like they used to be historically), but the collective bargaining has been a mess and it's harming the league balance something awful with youth players from the US all but eradicated, and foreigners staying in the Ruskie league rather than bother playing 40 substandard games per season. They should have negotiated for a better conference and division structure more like the old one.

Colour me surprised?
Not sure what the point of benching the "franchise" QB is. You know you have to take the rough with the sm...fucking terrible Rex.
I can't work out either team to be honest, but at least the Phish appear comitted to their players.

Tim Tebow to play for Milano Seamen. I'd prefer to be paid in cash, but whatever floats his boat I guess.

I used to read a lot of crap from US writers about how rugby players wouldn't be able to play NFL.
Daniel Adongo, a journeyman provincial level eggchaser from South Africa, is active for the Colts this week, after only switching from rugby in the summer. Hmmm.

I'd love to see some of the ball skills players, particularly runningbacks and wide receivers play Rugby. Quite why none of them have ever thought it was worth having a go at the Aussie league or the UK Superleague I don't know.

How about them Bears?
True story; in my Cardinals Madden franchise I game managed my team from 1-15 to 15-1 over three seasons with Josh McCown under centre as I spunked draft picks on enormous Tight Ends with wide receiver speed, a legion of 6'4 wideouts, and a muscled halfback with breakout speed, shiftiness and decent hands.
He was shit, but he was the cheapest QB I could find that wasn't a doorpost, or Jeff Garcia (or a former Dolphin).
Anyway, I have a soft spot for the Dolph look-a-like.

Cutler gone?
Also, I'm listening to the Patriots conference call with Billy and he sounds depressed. And yes, I can tell the difference in him!!
I know the old adage of "any team in the playoffs can win it" and we're only one game away from that scenario, either a Patriot win or Miami loss, but holy crap, there's no chance we'll do anything in the post-season. It's all very well people saying that the Patriots still won when Gronk was out at the start of the season, but they seem to be forgetting that we had Wilfork and Mayo in the defence then. Mike&Mike said yesterday that our average points went from 21 per game before Gronk to 32 points with Gronk, yes that's a huge difference, but we had to score that many because of the loss of the other two. Our defence will concede points and I don't think we're going to do very well in a foot race against a team that can score points.

I think the Colts and Pats are both massive pretenders this season. Would surprise me less to see the Chargers in the Super Bowl from the AFC tbh.
Not that it matters, you might as well give Seattle the Lombardi now.
